Aim This descriptive correlational study aimed to identify nurses’ perceptions of their own disaster preparedness and core competencies. Background As disasters have increased in number and severity in recent years, it is crucial that nurses should be appropriately prepared. There is still limited research on this issue in Turkey. Introduction With changes in disaster policies in the last decade, the need to improve the disaster core competencies of nurses has also increased. Methods A sample of 406 nurses selected with convenience sampling and working in an 1816‐bed capacity university hospital was included in this descriptive correlational study. A single‐item visual scale and the 45‐item Nurses Perceptions of Disaster Core Competencies Scale were used. Results ‘Technical Skills’ scored highest across the subscales of the scale, and ‘Critical Thinking Skills’ scored lowest. When the total and subscale scores were compared by age group, professional experience, working position and prior disaster experience, there were statistically significant differences. Conclusions The Turkish nurses had different levels of disaster core competencies and considered themselves more competent in some areas of disaster preparedness than in others. There are clearly gaps to be filled in disaster preparedness and core competencies in Turkish nurses. Implications for nursing and policy Nurse managers should advocate for increasing disaster preparedness for all nurses. This could be accomplished by offering formal training in disaster preparedness and/or by scheduling regular disaster drills, perhaps using a mix of tabletop exercises with occasional hospital‐wide disaster scenarios. In addition, managers should regularly evaluate nurses’ disaster core competencies to achieve effective preparation plans and training.
Anahtar kelimeler: Afetler, afetlere hazırlık, afet hemşireliği, afet yönetimi, hemşirelik, hemşirelikte yönetim ABSTRACTSince disasters often strike without warning, healthcare providers, especially nurses must be prepared with appropriate competencies for disaster procedures. Nurses' preparedness for disasters need to be evaluated to aid in the creation of effective national plans and educational programs. The purpose of the study is to present the current situation and to provide a working perspective on nurses' preparedness for disasters. It has been determined that studies that examine nurses' preparedness for disasters in Turkey are mostly descriptive and their samples are limited. It was seen that the studies in Turkey were carried out after 2010 and there was no research on this subject before. Studies have shown that nurses' basic competencies for disaster preparedness need to be developed, they need training programs and are willing to participate. The study revealed that the training of nurses for disasters in Turkey is inadequate and the nurses do not see themselves prepared and sufficient to intervene in disasters. When compared to other countries, it is seen that the studies done on this subject in Turkey are very few and it is necessary to carry out further research on the subject.
Anahtar Kelimeler: Afetler, Afet Planlama, Afet Tıbbı, Hemşirelik, Hemşirelik Yönetimi Araştırması Abstract: Aim: This study was designed as a descriptive study to determine nurses' submissions and experiences on disasters and perceptions of preparedness to disasters. Method: While 1236 nurses who work at a hospital of a state university was creating the study population, 406 nurses who determined using stratified sampling method consisted of the sample of the study. In the collection of research data, 13-item questionnaire and expression of the situation in the perception of preparedness to disasters were used. Results: At the end of the study, it was found that out of the nurses whose mean age was 31.27±5.86 and mean of working time was 8.07±6.60 by the time vast majority of the nurses were women (85.7%), married (59.4%), bachelor's degree holder (88.2%) and service nurses (56.2%). The most potential disaster that nurses think is an earthquake (70.9%) by the time majority of nurses consider the role of a nurse at every stage of disasters. Mean total point score of nurses' perception of preparedness to disasters is 4.62±1.74 (min-max: 0-10 points). Conclusion: It was found that the nurses generally saw themselves sufficient at 'medium level' for being prepared for disasters.
Objective: In this study, it is aimed to examine bibliographic characteristics of the studies about the patient safety in national literature and to determine the similarities and dissociations reported in the research results. Methods: In this study, a total of 33 studies that were performed in the Turkish sample between 2008 and 2017, and using "patient safety" and "safety culture" keywords were included in the study. Results: As a result of the analysis, it was found that most of the studies were carried out between 2014-2017 (n: 17) and in the Marmara region (n: 13), in the Ministry of Health Hospitals (n: 28), and only in the nurse sample (n: 18). Most of the studies are descriptive (n: 26) or correlational (n: 6). The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture was the most frequently used tool (n: 14) or the researchers formed the questions themselves (n: 11). The most common findings in the researches were the participants' opinions about the institutions patient safety levels, medical error reporting histories, the status of getting patient safety training or making a medical error, and comparisons with socio-demographic characteristics. Conclusion: It was seen that there were a few studies performed in private hospitals and in the sample of healthcare students. Also, the number of valid and reliable instruments about patient safety was limited, and using of non-valid and non-reliable tools was common. The studies mostly focused on personal and professional characteristics. So there is a need for more research related to organizational and managerial factors, which may affect the concept of patient safety in different sectors and samples.
