RESUMEN: En Castilla, en el alba de la Edad Moderna, el movimiento reformista supuso el estrechamiento de la vigilancia de los frailes y un continuo proceso de disciplinamiento y corrección de su conducta. INTRODUCCIÓNLa reforma en las comunidades dominicas castellanas se originó como movimiento a mediados del siglo XV, bajo el auspicio del cardenal Juan de Torquemada, quien promovió la reforma del convento de San Pablo de Valladolid 1 . A continuación, en 1467, el maestro general Marcial Auribelli, a instancias del cardenal vallisoletano, visitó la Provincia de España (Castilla) y creó un vicario propio para la reforma con poderes similares a los que tenían los superiores de la Congregación de Lombardía. Con ello se engendraba el conflicto que iba a enfrentar en las déca-das siguientes a los observantes y a los conventuales dominicos 2 .Si bien la lucha fue interna, pronto el movimiento adquirió un cariz marcadamente político y su desarrollo excedió los límites mismos de la Orden de Predicadores, pues, al practicar los miembros de la Congregación una metodología reformista expeditiva, que se imponía en los conventos por la fuerza, vulnerando los derechos electivos de los capítulos conventuales, inevitablemente tuvieron que recurrir al auxilio del brazo secular. De hecho, a partir de 1474 y durante todo el reinado de los Reyes Católicos, los observantes, frente a la resistencia y quejas de la mayoría de los conventos de Castilla, recibieron de la Corona amparo legal e incluso apoyo militar y financiero 3 .
