Jules Verne, les médias de masse et l'imaginaire de la rupture de communication L'oeuvre de Jules Verne est portée par un puissant imaginaire de la communication, que l'on peut considérer dans sa triple dimension. 1) D'abord géographique, car il n'est pas de communication sans présupposition d'une spatialité : le roman de Verne relie les territoires entre eux, rapproche un point du globe à un autre, établit des liens là où il n'y en avait pas encore entre les terres connues et les espaces lointains. 2) La communication recouvre également une dimension technique (appareils optiques et sonores, ainsi que tous les moyens de déplacements qui permettent de surmonter les étendues géographiques). 3/Elle s'incarne enfin dans une dimension médiatique, hantée par les journalistes, par les journaux et par les bruits de la renommée de ses personnages, tout en exploitant intensément les deux éléments précédents : des techniques (le télégraphe, par exemple) et des espaces, incessamment parcourus par les journalistes. C'est à cet aspect médiatique de l'oeuvre de Jules Verne que cet article est consacré, prolongeant quelques rares réflexions menées antérieurement par d'autres chercheurs 1. Il vise à mieux comprendre comment, d'une part, l'écrivain a représenté le monde de l'information et d'autre part, comment il a fondamentalement interrogé, grâce à ces mises en scène romanesques, le contexte de la naissance de la communication médiatique de masse dont il fut l'exact contemporain : en 1863 fut lancé le Petit journal, premier journal populaire à un sou, et publié le premier roman de Verne, Cinq semaines en ballon. Or le lecteur se souvient-il de ce que faisait le héros de cette histoire, Samuel Fergusson, avant de s'élancer au-dessus du continent africain ? « [Il] fut le correspondant le plus actif et le plus intéressant du Daily Telegraph, ce journal à un penny, dont le tirage monte jusqu'à cent quarante mille exemplaires par jour, et suffit à peine à plusieurs millions de lecteurs 2. » L'Afrique à traverser d'est en ouest, un ballon à la fine pointe de la technologie aérostatique et un ancien journaliste pour le piloter : tout était en place pour lancer la série des romans qui allaient rendre Jules Verne immédiatement célèbre.
