Experimental Evaluation of the shear bearing safety The experimental evaluation of a reinforced concrete member with the danger of a brittle shear failure is yet not covered by the Guideline of the DAfStb for load testing because of the low ductile failure process. This paper describes the theoretical and experimental investigations carried out in [1] to allow a safe evaluation of the shear bearing safety in‐situ. For a high resolution of the beginning failure processes a combination of modern measuring techniques was applied. The results of the experimental investigations are shown and discussed. Finally advises are given for the experimental evaluation of the shear bearing safety during load testing of reinforced concrete members.
Load testing – international state of the art For 15 years load testing in Germany is regulated by the guideline of the Deutscher Ausschuss für Stahlbeton (DAfStb). Further research activity resulted in an improvement of the existing evaluation criteria. This and the introduction of the Eurocode into practice led to the need to revise the existing guideline. This paper summarizes the actual international rules for load testing and compares the different existing evaluation criteria. In addition to the description of the german standard, the actual development of the method of load testing in the USA is shown. Practical examples compare the German and American guidelines. It is concluded which requirements are demanded for the amendment of the guideline.
State assessment results of conventional or advanced experimental investigations of existing concrete structures (e.g. using the ,,EXTRA"-method " 2) are absolutely valid at the time of testing, but usually not longer than a time of at most five to ten years after the testing date. Thereafter the assessment results will be more and more unsure because of progressing (often unknown) deterioration processes. At the latest at that time a repeated (but expensive) test procedure would be necessary. In the most of these cases (but of course also in many other situations) the concept of a supervised lifetime extension by monitoring of a small number of key-measurands would be the more safer and reasonable solution.Since two years the authors have a close co-operation with the aim to develop a remote monitoring system for fields of application like mentioned before. Based on experiences collected on different applications of such a system more general demands on an efficient system configuration could be derived. An overview on the main characteristics is systematized by matrix elements defined by the main demands flexibility, robustness and reliability as well as the main system components hardware, software and application management.Afterwards it will be shown exemplary (system structure, measurement modes, sensor selection criteria, data transmission, data management as well as optional features like solar energy supply or overload truck identification) how the remote monitoring system SMS 2001® is able to fulfil the demands discussed before and which further developments are under way respectively. Finally some experiences from the first presentation of a SMS 2001® in the United States will be added.
In Germany a group of researchers from four universities has developed an advanced experiment supported state assessment method for short and midspan concrete bridges under the term ,,EXTRA". As a background for this work are the deficiencies of many bridges on one hand and the rising disproportions between available funds and costs for demolition and rebuilding on the other. The presented method can be used preferably in such cases, where conventional assessment methods cannot be applied successfully. The fundamental idea of this method is to determine the ultimate testing load UTL of the structure. This UTL is defined as that load, which just not reaches a level which would cause damages in the tested structure. The level of UTL can be considerably higher than the safe load. For identification the UTL special criterions has been developed. From the UTL afterwards the safe load can be derived by safety considerations. A guideline for practical use of the method for building structures will be available shortly; another one for bridges will be prepared in the near future.Methodical and technical conditions and tasks for preparation and practical realization of the test will be introduced. Main subjects are safety aspects, needed theoretical and practical pre-investigations, the test program, different criterions for UTL-identification, the loading regime and corresponding on-line information on the building response In connection with the presentation of a selected application example experiences on the co-operation with owners, authorities and uninvolved colleagues will be discussed and advises on further developments will be given. Acknowledgments finalize the contribution.
Experimental Assessment of the structural safety of reinforced concrete structures without shear reinforcement. For the experimental investigation of existing concrete structures it is crucial to be able to analyze and assess the load bearing behavior online during the loading test. Only this ensures that a pronouced failure or an inacceptable damage of the structure can be avoided in the test.Unlike bending failure, this assessment is rather difficult and not yet securely possible for low‐ductile types of failure, like the shear failure of reinforced concrete structures members without web reinforcement. This paper explains the difficulties of assessing the danger of shear failures of reinforced concrete structures und discusses which main influencing factors have to be considered for an evaluation and especially for the case of a loading test. For the experimental tests, which have been carried out, different measuring techniques (usual deformation measurement techniques, photogrammetry and acoustic emission analysis) were combined and tested regarding their suitability for the detection of smallest structural changes.
Historical Development and current practise of load tests in situPart 2: Development of standards and current practise. Because of the large demand and use of load testing in the 19 th and at the beginning of the 20 th century, there was the necessity to standardise the planning, execution and analysis in general guidelines and codes. This article describes the struggling and first tentative specification, which were more and more specified to an useful basis in the following years. The used criterions for the assessment have often been a reason for critics on the value and the safety of loading tests. The further development of calculation methods especially the computer technology made the load testing of new structures superfluous in the 1970s. But for existing structures loading tests are today often a -and sometimes the only -method to proof a sufficient load bearing capacity. The today used modern loadingand measuring technology provides, in contrast to the traditional method, a high degree of safety and structural information. Entwicklung von Richtlinien und Normen
