The findings of this study suggest that: (i) there is a higher risk of follicular adenomas developing in a gland affected by thyroid autoimmunity than in a previously normal gland; (ii) L-T4 therapy may prevent the formation of new nodules or the development of goitre in the contralateral lobe; and (iii) in the absence of prophylactic treatment after surgery, the contralateral lobe of subjects with thyroid autoimmunity and/or previous subclinical hypothyroidism develops morphological abnormalities.
Pellets of 17\g=a\-and 17\g=b\-oestradiol were implanted into cholesterol-fed chickens. The 17\g=a\-isomercaused an increase in body weight, accompanied by testicular atrophy, and also caused an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity in the aorta and in the plasma. The \g=b\-isomer, besides the above effects, also enhanced hypercholesterolaemia and prevented coronary atherosclerosis. It is concluded that these last-named actions are related to the \g=b\-orientation of the \p=m-\OHgroup at C-17 in the steroid nucleus.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
