Le indicazioni desumibili dall’analisi della documentazione archeologica disponibile, in primo luogo di quella di carattere funerario, mostrano inequivocabilmente come, a partire dagli inizi dell’età del ferro (ma già in precedenza) e sino al III secolo a. C., i modelli di autorappresentazione, ai quali era affidato il compito di richiamare e tramandare l’immagine sociale del defunto presso le comunità di area medio-adriatica, appaiano, in ambito maschile, pressoché costantemente incentrati sulla connotazione guerriera dello scomparso. A livello di corredo funerario, il ricorso a tali modelli si esplicita, pertanto, nella ricorrente presenza di armi, offensive e difensive. Tra queste ultime, particolare importanza, anche per le valenze distintive in senso sociale connesse al loro possesso, sembrano avere gli elmi. Attraverso un censimento e un esame delle varie classi di elmi attestate, fra la fine dell’età del Bronzo e l’epoca tardo-repubblicana, in area abruzzese e molisana, e delle non molte, ancorché significative, testimonianze iconografiche riferibili a quel contesto, si svolgono, dunque, alcune considerazioni circa la presenza e la circolazione di tali classi di elmi nel lungo periodo, rapportandole ai processi di cambiamento sociale e di trasformazione degli assetti territoriali, etnici e politici di quelle aree.
