La obra de Georges Arthur Goldschmidt, a pesar de su amplio reconocimiento, sobre todo en Alemania y Francia, sigue siendo desconocida en los países de habla hispana. Ello parece una omisión potencialmente productiva, ya que sus textos no solamente ofrecen una lúcida reflexión acerca de la relación entre las lenguas y el pensar, sino que además problematizan cómo la traducción afecta al pensar. Se discute la presencia de la traducción en tanto práctica y teoría en algunos textos del autor, considerando especialmente la pregunta por el trauma.

Se inscribe en un campo tensión que se extiende entre el imperativo a traducir y su imposibilidad. El diálogo con el psicoanálisis tiene un rendimiento aún no del todo agotado para una discusión pendiente acerca del estatuto y los límites del traducir. Esta operación, en la medida en que mantiene relaciones diversas con la norma y la exclusión, juega un rol clave a la hora de examinar el límite entre lo normal y lo patológico.
Para Freud lo Unheimlich es una palabra-concepto porque comporta un núcleo que justifica su empleo en el psicoanálisis. Otorgándole estatuto de concepto, Freud articulará lo ominoso a la angustia buscando no perder lo particular de este nuevo descubrimiento, diferenciando algo "ominoso al interior de lo angustioso". En su seminario de 1963-64 dedicado a la angustia, Lacan revisará los desarrollos freudianos respecto al único "afecto verdadero", ubicando en un lugar metodológicamente privilegiado al concepto de Unheimlich; y ejemplificándolo mediante las variantes de su esquema óptico, retornará sobre la relación entre lo ominoso, la angustia y el deseo, desarrollada por Freud en 1919.
