The uppermost Paleozoic metaclastic sequences of the Pelagonian zone in northern Greece are connected to the western margin of the zone. They represent paleogeographic conditions of a deltaic environment and continental slope, which are related to the separation of the Paleozoic continent and the initial rifting in the western ophiolite belt in Greece. The metaclastic sequences define the western (external) boundary of the Pelagonian zone, and are used to find the continuation of this boundary in the Sporades and Oinouses islands in the Aegean Sea, in order to help answer the question of the connection between the Hellenides and the Taurides in Turkey.

Biodegradable 3D-printable inks based on pectin have been developed as a system for direct and indirect wound-dressing applications, suitable for 3D printing technologies. The 3D-printable inks formed free-standing transparent films upon drying, with the latter exhibiting fast disintegration upon contact with aqueous media. The antimicrobial and wound-healing activities of the inks have been successfully enhanced by the addition of particles, comprised of chitosan and cyclodextrin inclusion complexes with propolis extract. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied for the optimization of the inks (extrusion-printing pressure, shrinkage minimization over-drying, increased water uptake and minimization of the disintegration of the dry patches upon contact with aqueous media). Particles comprised of chitosan and cyclodextrin/propolis extract inclusion complexes (CCP), bearing antimicrobial properties, were optimized and integrated with the produced inks. The bioprinted patches were assessed for their cytocompatibility, antimicrobial activity and in vitro wound-healing properties. These studies were complemented with ex vivo skin adhesion measurements, a relative surface hydrophobicity and opacity measurement, mechanical properties, visualization, and spectroscopic techniques. The in vitro wound-healing studies revealed that the 3D-bioprinted patches enhanced the in vitro wound-healing process, while the incorporation of CCP further enhanced wound-healing, as well as the antimicrobial activity of the patches.

Orogenic granitoids often display mineralogical and geochemical features suggesting that open-system magmatic processes played a key role in their evolution. This is testified by the presence of enclaves of more mafic magmas dispersed into the granitoid mass, the occurrence of strong disequilibrium textures in mineralogical phases, and/or extreme geochemical and isotopic variability. In this contribution, intrusive rocks constituting the Sithonia Plutonic Complex (Northern Greece) are studied on the basis of mineral chemistry, whole-rock major, trace element geochemistry, and Sr and Nd isotopic composition. Sithonia rocks can be divided into a basic group bearing macroscopic (mafic enclaves), microscopic (disequilibrium textures), geochemical, and isotopic evidence of magma interaction, and an acid group in which most geochemical and isotopic features are consistent with a magma mixing process, but macroscopic and microscopic features are lacking. A two-step Mixing plus Fractional Crystallization (MFC) process is considered responsible for the evolution of the basic group. The first step explains the chemical variation in the mafic enclave group: a basic magma, represented by the least evolved enclaves, interacted with an acid magma, represented by the most evolved granitoid rocks, to give the most evolved enclaves. The second step explains the geochemical variations of the remaining rocks of the basic group: most evolved enclaves interacted with the same acid magma to give the spectrum of rock compositions with intermediate geochemical signatures. A convection-diffusion process is envisaged to explain the geochemical and isotopic variability and the lack of macroscopic and petrographic evidence of magma interaction in the acid group. The mafic magma is presumably the result of melting of a mantle, repeatedly metasomatized and enriched in LILE due to subduction events, whereas the acid magma is considered the product of partial melting of lower crustal rocks of intermediate to basaltic composition. It is shown that Sithonia Plutonic Complex offers the opportunity to investigate in detail the complex interplay between geochemistry and magma dynamics during magma interaction processes between mantle and crustal derived magmas.

The Oligocene volcanic rocks of the Central Rhodope massif range in composition from basalts to rhyolites, and belong to orogenie calc-alkaline and shoshonite series. These lavas were erupted during an exten sional tectonic event, in a post-collisional setting. The eastern part of the massif, the Kotani-Kalotycho area, includes mainly basic to intermediate rocks (basalts, basaltic andesites, high-K andesites, latites, trachytes), whereas the western part, the Dipotama-Kotyli and Zarkadenia areas, is of larger extent and consists of acid rocks only (high-K dacites, rhyolites). Mineralogieal, petrologie al and geochemical data supported by isotopic data (87 Srf 6 Sr ratios 0.706-0.707 and (') 18 0 values ranging mainly from + 6. 2 %0 to + 7.7 %0) indicate that the basic to intermediate rocks evolved predominantly by assimilation/fractional crystallization of a parental magma which originated at the mantle-crust boundary according to the MASH hypothesis of Hildreth & Moorbath (1988). Geochemical data and Sr and 0 isotope ratios (0.708-0.709 and + 8.8 %0 to + 12.9 %0, respectively), as weil as the geological evidence, do not favour a genetic link between the acid and the basic to intermediate rocks that can be explained by simple fractional crystallization. Instead, disequilibrium phenocryst assemblages in the high-K dacites and many of the rhyolites lead to the conclusion that these rocks were mainly derived by mixing of a basie and an anatectic silicic magma. Tbe basaltic magma which triggered the crustal melting is considered consan guineous with the parental liquid feeding the Kotani-Kalotycho basic to intermediate lavas.
