Les juges de l'Audience y virent la preuve que la ran coeur accu mulée depuis la révolte du « Commun », en 1781, ser vait de caisse de réso nance à la séduc tion exer cée par les « nou velles de France ». Les pla cards de Carthagène, les « petits dra peaux rouges » de Quito et les pas quins de Cuenca ren for cèrent cette inquié tude. Aussi, le vice-roi Ezpeleta, sou cieux d'écar ter la sus pi cion d'avoir intro duit le venin des idées fran çaises, dut-il se résoudre à pro noncer le divorce, déjà consommé à Madrid, entre l'abso lu tisme et « l'esprit éclairé ». La dis crète indul gence du vice-roi à l'égard des publi cistes Eugenio Espejo et Antonio Nariño indique pour tant qu'il conti nua d'hono rer « l'ami tié » entre hommes de bien qui les liait depuis 1789.
