A tuberculose é uma doença infecciosa com acometimento multissistêmico de grande impacto na saúde pública global, devido ao seu alto índice de morbimortalidade. Os pulmões são os principais sítios de comprometimento e, raramente, os olhos. Nos casos de tuberculose ocular, a uveíte é a manifestação predominante, porém, de difícil diagnóstico devido ao amplo espectro de afecções que cursam com manifestações oculares. O diagnóstico de tuberculose ocular baseia-se em achados clínicos, teste cutâneo tuberculínico positivo com o endurecimento superior a 10 mm, além de exclusão laboratorial de outras afecções que desenvolvam uveíte. O tratamento pode ser realizado com drogas antituberculosas e, em alguns casos, associado com corticosteróides, porém para o tratamento adequado é imprescindível o diagnóstico precoce, o qual está intimamente ligado com um bom prognóstico e aumento da sobrevida do paciente.
A diabetes mellitus é uma doença metabólica crônica, caracterizada por níveis séricos de glicose acima do normal, decorrente de defeitos na excreção ou ação da insulina. De acordo com o mecanismo fisiopatológico, a diabetes pode ser classificada em tipo 1, quando há destruição autoimune das células β pancreáticas com consequente deficiência na produção de insulina, ou em tipo 2, quando resultante de anormalidades que levam à resistência da ação insulínica. Alguns dos sintomas de hiperglicemia incluem poliúria, polidipsia e perda de peso, porém, não é raro o diagnóstico dessa afecção em pacientes assintomáticos, visto que, inicialmente, é uma doença invisível e silenciosa. A ausência de controle adequado da glicemia nos pacientes diabéticos pode levar a outras comorbidades, culminando com o aparecimento de graves complicações, que reduzem a expectativa e a qualidade de vida do portador desta doença, como o desenvolvimento de um quadro demencial. A partir dessa importante correlação, o presente estudo analisa a ação de certos fármacos no prognóstico evolutivo do acometimento neurológico, salientando a importância do controle glicêmico, por meio da farmacoterapia e, não menos importante, de hábitos de vida saudáveis, uma vez que a hiperglicemia e a hiperinsulinemia, resultante da resistência insulínica, estão diretamente relacionadas com a degeneração cognitiva.
