As duas principais correntes que estudam a relacao entre o espaco urbano e a criminalidade divergem quanto ao que seriam os efeitos dos usos comerciais e da diversidade de usos sobre a ocorrencia de crimes. A primeira corrente, vinculada a linha teorica de Jane Jacobs, defende que esses usos dificultam a acao dos criminosos por trazerem mais pessoas para a area e, com elas, os “olhos da rua”; a segunda, alinhada a Oscar Newman e seu conceito de espacos defensaveis, adota uma postura mais cautelosa e argumenta que esses usos podem enfraquecer o senso de territorialidade e, com isso, diminuir a disposicao de promover uma vigilancia natural. Com vistas a investigar essa questao, comparamos uma amostra aleatoria representativa do locais em que aconteceram crimes em Florianopolis no ano de 2011 com um Grupo de Controle, sorteado nas imediacoes de cada ponto, a fim de analisar as possíveis influencias exercidas pelos seguintes fatores: as proporcoes de cada tipo de uso (especialmente o comercial), a influencia do horario de funcionamento, a visibilidade das edificacoes para a rua e a diversidade de usos. Os resultados indicaram que a visibilidade da edificacao para a rua exerce influencia significativa, especialmente com interfaces de baixa visibilidade associadas aos locais de crime. Usos comerciais e afins tambem se mostraram associados aos locais de crime, com maior ocorrência desses usos na amostra em comparacao com o Grupo de Controle. O mesmo foi encontrado para a diversidade de usos. Quanto ao horario de funcionamento, entretanto, nao foram encontradas diferencas significativas entre os dois grupos.Palavras‑chave: Criminalidade.
