Dehydration up to 773 K of solid H3+n(PVnMo12-n040) -xH20 heteropoly acids (HPA) has been studied by e m . spectroscopy. Several V4+ signals observed during this process have been simulated and fitted by means of a computer program. These signals reflect the state of the heteropoly acid after thermal treatment in air and vacuum. Loss of water of crystallization and constitution as well as destruction of the heteropoly acid are well documented by appropriate V4+ signals. Regeneration of a destroyed Keggin anion by adsorption of water is observed. Monocrystal samples show angular dependence in the hydrated state; they appear polycrystalline after dehydration. The influence of vanadium content is indicated by a temperature-dependent signal of exchangecoupled V4+ ions obtained from the PV,Mo, HPA.Previous e.s.r. studies on H,(PMo1204,) and H4(SiMo1204,) heteropoly acids (HPA) have shown' that e.s.r. spectroscopy is able to establish the stability and structural variations of these compounds in the course of oxidative and reductive thermal treatment. Substitution of 1-3 molybdenum ions by vanadium ions does not change the Keggin anion structure of the HPA,2 whereas its catalytic properties may be strongly influen~ed?~ The latter is also the case for the e.s.r. spectra, because nearly all changes involving valency as well as coordination state can be observed in the V4+ e m . spectra. Compared with the Mo5+ spectra of the molybdophosphoric HPA,l the V4+ spectra, owing to their hyperfine structure (h.f.s.) 51V x loo%, I = 7/2, allow one to obtain more information, and in greater detail. In the literature there are reported few e.s.r. studies of molybdovanadophosphoric acids of heteropoly anions in so1utions6-8 or in the solidNo systematic e.s.r. investigations have been reported that allow an identification of the spectra with respect to the anion state. In the present contribution the dehydration and thermal treatment in air and vacuum of powdered samples of H3+,(PV,Mo12-,04,) with n = 1-3 (hereafter abbreviated PV,Mo12-,) between room temperature and 773 K have been studied. (Some measurements of a monocrystal sample are added.) Investigations to regenerate the dehydrated HPA with H 2 0 are discussed.
ExperimentalThe H3+,(PV,Mo,2-n04,) xH20 heteropoly acids (HPA) were synthesized according to the method of Tsigdinos and Hallada.', The analysis of the samples used for the e.s.r. measurements yieldedll and 115
