Summary Studies on antibiotic feeding in nutritive doses on the development of resistance of the coliform gut flora in pigs 1. Feeding experimenits with terramycin and chloramphenicol Feeding pigs a supplement of 20 p. p. m. terramycin (Terramycin, Pfizer) or 20 p. p. m. chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin, Parke Davis) resulted in the elimination from the gut flora of coliforms susceptible to these antibiotics and their replacement by resistant organisms. The total number of coliforms per gram of faeces was not thereby measurably changed. The time interval from the beginning of feeding the antibiotic to the time when no further organisms sensitive to the antibiotic could be found depends on the magnitude of the resistant part of the total coliform flora. This time was one week when the resistant part at the beginning of antibiotic feeding was less than one‐tenth of the total number of coliforms. Three weeks after ending chloramphenicol feeding, organisms which were again sensitive to the antibiotic were detectable. The number of resistant organisms per gram of faeces was always higher than 106 over a period of 17 weeks in which food without chloramphenicol replaced the supplemented food. The results of chloramphenicol feeding showed that feeding antibiotics at a level of 20 p. p. m. produced a lasting change in the coliform gut f...
Summary The urease activity of Brucella The Brucella belong to the obligate urea‐splitting bacteria and possess the enzyme urease. The amount of urease present varies from one Brucella type to another and its determination by colorimetric methods serves as one method of type differentiation. A total of 46 Brucella strains (18 Br. suis, 11 Br. melitensis and 17 Br. abortus) were examined for their urease activity by two colorimetric methods: Bauer's method, using sodium phosphate‐urea solution as indicator medium. A method using glycerin‐urea‐meat broth.Differentiation of Br. suis from the other types is possible in this way since urease is present in largest amount in Br. suis strains. The method is thus of some value when used along with other typing procedures.
