It has been found that honey ameliorates cardiovascular risk factors in healthy individuals and in patients with elevated risk factors. The present study investigated the effect of natural honey on total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triacylglycerole, C-reactive protein (CRP), fasting blood glucose (FBG), and body weight in overweight individuals. There were 55 patients, overweight or obese, who were randomly recruited into the study and assigned into two groups: control group (17 subjects) and experimental group (38 subjects). Patients in the control group received 70 g of sucrose daily for a maximum of 30 days and patients in the experimental group received 70 g of natural honey for the same period. In the control and experimental groups, body weight, body mass index, body fat weight, total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, triacylglycerole, FBG, and CRP were measured before treatment and at day 31 after the commencement of treatment. Results showed that honey caused a mild reduction in body weight (1.3%) and body fat (1.1%). Honey reduced total cholesterol (3%), LDL-C (5.8), triacylglycerole (11%), FBG (4.2%), and CRP (3.2%), and increased HDL-C (3.3%) in subjects with normal values, while in patients with elevated variables, honey caused reduction in total cholesterol by 3.3%, LDL-C by 4.3%, triacylglycerole by 19%, and CRP by 3.3% (p < 0.05). It is our conclusion that consumption of natural honey reduces cardiovascular risk factors, particularly in subjects with elevated risk factors, and it does not increase body weight in overweight or obese subjects.

Background: Obesity is a risk factor for many chronic diseases, and its prevalence and trends vary among populations. Saudi Arabia shows a greater rise in prevalence than many other countries. We aimed to study the association between several chronic disorders, demographic, and lifestyle factors with increased body mass index (BMI) in the adult population of Jeddah. Methods: Data were obtained from a door-to-door cross sectional study. A three-stage stratified cluster sampling technique was adopted. Individuals in selected households agreeing to participate were interviewed to complete a predesigned questionnaire covering demographic and lifestyle variables, medical history, and family history of chronic diseases. This was followed by anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. A random capillary plasma glucose (RPG) was measured, followed by further testing using fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) to verify whether participants were normal, diabetic, or prediabetic. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to adjust for confounding factors. Results: A total of 1419 individuals were included in the study: 667 men and 752 women. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 35.1 and 34.8%, respectively, in men, and 30.1% and 35.6%, respectively, in women. Both overweight and obesity increased in prevalence to 60 years of age, and decreased in the oldest age group in both sexes. After adjusting for age, risk of obesity in men was increased with having a postgraduate degree [odds ratio (OR), 95%CI = 2.48, 1.1–5.61] and decreased with increased physical activity (OR, 95%CI = 0.49, 0.26–0.91). Risk of prediabetes and diabetes was increased in obese women (OR, 95%CI = 2.94, 1.34–6.44, and 3.61, 1.58–8.26 respectively), that of hypertension in obese men (OR, 95%CI =2.62, 1.41–4.87), and that of dyslipidemia in both sexes (OR, 95%CI = 2.60, 1.40–4.83 in men, and 2.0, 1.01–3.85 in women). A family history of dyslipidemia was associated with reduced risk of obesity among women (OR, 95%CI = 0.33, 0.12–0.92), whereas, in people with above normal weight (BMI ⩾25), there was increased risks of prediabetes, diabetes, and dyslipidemia among women (OR, 95%CI = 2.50, 1.21–5.17; 3.20, 1.45–7.03, and 1.88, 1.02–3.49, respectively ), and of hypertension among men (OR, 95%CI = 1.80, 1.00–3.23). Conclusions: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Saudi population remain high, indicating ineffectiveness or lack of preventive measures. Risk of prediabetes, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension increased with increasing BMI, with some sex differences in these associations.

Cascade testing for FH in the UK is feasible, acceptable and likely to be cost-effective if it is a routine aspect of clinical care. However, national implementation would require an integrated infrastructure, so that all individuals have access to testing, and specialist services for the management of young people.

This study revealed that there was a correlation between ghrelin and EGF level in breast milk of mothers with obese and non-obese infants, suggesting a possible regulatory effect of these two hormones on weight in infants.

The vascular effects of dietary vitamin E were investigated in isolated carotid artery preparations from cholesterol-fed New Zealand White rabbits. Rabbits were fed either a control, 1% cholesterol, or 1% cholesterol plus 0.2% vitamin E diet for 4 weeks. In raised-tone preparations, relaxant responses to acetylcholine were enhanced in rabbits fed cholesterol plus vitamin E, reversing the reduction in responses measured in preparations from cholesterol-fed rabbits. Relaxant responses to the calcium ionophore A23187 were significantly enhanced in cholesterol plus vitamin E-fed rabbits compared with those fed cholesterol alone, with no difference between control and cholesterol-fed rabbits. Relaxant responses to sodium nitroprusside were not different between the three dietary groups. Constrictor responses to noradrenaline and serotonin in isolated carotid artery preparations at basal tone were unaltered after cholesterol and cholesterol plus vitamin E diets. The copper-induced oxidation of beta-very-low-density lipoproteins (beta VLDL) isolated from plasma of rabbits fed a cholesterol plus vitamin E diet was almost completely inhibited compared with the oxidation of beta VLDL from rabbits fed cholesterol alone. These results show that vitamin E prevents endothelial dysfunction associated with cholesterol feeding and suggests that vitamin E may be beneficial in preventing functional impairment associated with atherosclerosis.

Several recent studies have indicated the possible beneficial effects of antioxidants, specifically vitamin E, in primary and secondary coronary prevention. These studies suggest that a diet enriched in vitamin E is insufficient to have a significant protective effect, whereas supplements, in excess of 200 international units (IU) per day, are efficacious in preventing coronary disease in both men and women. The mechanisms by which vitamin E may exert its protection are uncertain, but, vitamin E is lipophilic and has been shown to inhibit the oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein (LDL), a process thought to be of crucial importance in atherogenesis. We have also previously shown that alpha-tocopherol (the biologically most potent isomer of vitamin E) has important direct effects on vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells. In the present study we have investigated the effects of oral supplements of vitamin E (400 IU per day) on platelet and mononuclear cell function in patients with hypercholesterolaemia. We found that although vitamin E supplementation had no significant effect on mononuclear cell adhesion ex vivo, it had a significant effect on the thrombin-induced platelet aggregation (P < 0.01; ANOVA): 6 weeks after starting the vitamin E supplements, the mean EC50 for thrombin-induced aggregation increased 132% (P < 0.05; paired t-test) compared to treatment with placebo. The effects of vitamin E on platelet function may, in part, explain its anti-atherogenic properties.
