Eine 1980 gegrundete Zeitachrift triigt den Titel ,,Controlled Clinical Trials". Zu sequentiellen klinischen Studien erschien 1976 eine Neuauflage des Buches von ARMITAGE und 1982 ein Buch von WHITEHEAD, zu den klinischen Studien Bucher von SOHWARTZ a. 0 . (1980), FRIEDMAN a. 0. (1981) sowie Sammelbande von HABRIS and FITZGERALD (1970) und JOHNSON (1977).Das vorliegende Buch mit dem Untertitel ,,a practical Approach" stellt die Prinzipien dcr Planung, der Durchfiihrung, der Organisation, der bioastatistischen Auswertung und Interpretation in leicht IesbarerForm mit vielenBeispielendar. Es beginnt mit derDarstellungder geschichtlichen Entwicklung und begriindet in einem eigenen Kapitel die Notwendigkeit der Durchfiihrung randomisierter klinischer Studien. Grundziige der biometrischen Versuchsplanung und wesentlicher statistischer Verfahren werden ebenfah kurz anhand von verschiedenen Beispielen dargestellt. Das Buch wendet sich a n den Kliniker und andere Wiseenschaftler ohne tiefere biometrische Kenntnisse und ist fur einen breiten Leserkreis empfehlenewert.G. Enderlein
Das mit Spannung erwartete Buch von Prof. Scheffb iiber die Varianzanalyse unterscheidet sich grundlegend von den meist unter einem Titel iihnlich ,,Design (and analysis) of experiments" erschienenen Werken, die sich mit der Anlage und varianzanalytischen Auswertung von Versuchen befassen. Prof. ScheffB wollte kein Handbuch zur Anlage und Auswertung spezieller Versuchsanlagen schaff en. Er stellte sich vielmehr die Aufgabe, die moderne Theorie der Varianzanalyse in ihren Grundlagen einheitlich darzustellen. Besondere Betonung liegt hierbei auf dem Wort ,,einheitlich". Ausgehend von den zugrundeliegenden mathematischen Modellen, die auch in ihrer Relation zueinander betrachtet werden, werden folgerichtig die Theorie aufgebaut und die mathematischen Ableitungen in voller Strenge wiedergegeben. Mit gliicklicher Hand vereint der Autor mathematische Eleganz (Matrizenschreibweise) und Anschaulichkeit, gibt geometrische Interpretationen der abgeleiteten Theoreme und zeigt ihre praktische Bedeutung auf. So enthiilt das Buch auch kurze Abschnitte iiber die Rechenverfahren und es diskutiert die Anwendbarkeit der verschiedenen Modelle und Testverfahren. Am Ende jedes Kapitels finden sich Probleme, insgesamt 117, davon erfordern 38 numerische Berechnungen. Der Leser kann mit ihrer Hilfe das Verstandnis des Stoffes insbesondere im Hinblick auf die praktische Anwendung vertiefen.Der Autor hat sein Buch einerseits als Hochschullehrbuch (fiir eine einsemestrige Vorlesung) fur Studenten hoherer Semester mit mathematischer und mathematisch-statistischer Grundausbildung vorgesehen, es andererseits auch speziell zum Selbststudium eingerichtet. Die benotigte Vektor-und Matrixalgebra wurdeum das Werk in sich ab-zuschlieBenin einem Anhang angefiihrt, der noch einige andere Definitionen, Erklarungen und Theoreme enthiilt, die den Flu13 der Abhandlungen storen wiirden.
In der Monografiereihe des Londoner Verlags Chapman and Hall iiber Statiatik und angewendta Wahrecheinlichkeit emhienen in den letzten 15 Jahren fa& 30 intareasante Titel. Einer der beiden Herausgeber der Xihe, der bekannta englische Statistiker und Biometriker D. R. Cox, hat neben seinen anderen Werken selbst fiinf dieser Monografien mit verfa6t. Die Band? der h i h e zeichnen sich durch einen begrenzten Umfang (um 200 Seiten), handliches Format (22x14 cm) und eine gut lesbare Darstellung des Stoffee aus. Es werden die statiatiachen Verfahren eowohl mit Formeln dargeetellt 81s auch in ihren Eigenechaften beechrieben und h a p p anhand von Beispielen erliiutart. Auf langere mathematiache Ableitungen wird verzichtet; dafiir sind aber Verweise auf die wichtigste Literatur angegeben. Der vorliegende Band ist der Analyee von Vberlebdaten gewidmet. Hier ist die Entwicklung in den letzten Jahren weit iiber die klsssischen Sterbetafelmethoden der Bevijlkerungsmathematik hinausgegangen. Vorwiegend zur Auswertung klinischer und epidemiologiecher Studien, aber auch fur indnetrielle Lebensdaueranalysen werden die neuen Verfahren genutzt. Cox hat im Jahre 1972 mit seiner Arbeit ,,Regression models and life tables" im Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (B) weeentliche Impulse gegeben. Nach der Darlegung der Problemstallung betrachten die Autoren in der Monografie verschiedene Ausfallzeitvertailungen und .die Likelihoodschatzungen der Parameter. Danach werden die einfachen nichtparametriechen Schatzverfahren erkutmt, vor allem die Kaplan-Meier-Schiitzung. Greenwoods Formel fiir die Standardfehler, kumulative Auefallwahrscheinlichkeitechatzer und Bayes'ache Verfahren. Ala Modelle fiir die Abhiingigkeit der Uberlebenszeit von EinfluSgrijBen werden d m einf8che ,,akcelerierta" Vberlebemmodell, dae proportionale .,Hazard-Modell" und Verallgemeinerungen dieser Modelle betrschtet. I m letzten Kapitel wird der EM-Algorithmus dargelegt, der geeignet ist, die allgemeine Behandlung unvolletiindiger und fehlender Information vonunehmen. Die knappe Darstellung konzentriert sich auf die neueren Entwicklungen und bringt auch eigene neue Resultate der Autoren. Der Stetiatiker und Biometriker wird daa Buch deshalb g e m zur Hand nehmen.
