Water resources in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil commonly contain high salt concentrations, compromising the quality of water for agriculture. Thus, adopting techniques that make the use of these resources feasible in agriculture is fundamental. The present study aimed to evaluate the gas exchanges, quantum yield and photosynthetic pigments of grafted West Indian cherry subjected to salt stress and potassium fertilization under greenhouse conditions in the municipality of Campina Grande, PB, Brazil. Treatments were distributed in randomized blocks, composed of two levels of electrical conductivity -ECw (0.8 and 3.8 dS m -1 ) of water and four doses of potassium (50, 75, 100 and 125% of the dose recommended for the crop), with three replicates. The dose relative to 100% corresponded to 19.8 g of K 2 O per plant. Gas exchanges, chlorophyll a fluorescence and photosynthetic pigments of West Indian cherry are negatively affected by irrigation using water with electrical conductivity of 3.8 dS m -1 , which compromises the photosynthetic apparatus of the plant, a situation evidenced by the reduction in photosystem II quantum efficiency. Increasing potassium doses led to increments in transpiration, chlorophyll a maximum fluorescence and chlorophyll b content in West Indian cherry grown under salt stress, but do not attenuate the negative effects of irrigation with 3.8 dS m -1 water on its potential photochemical efficiency. Keywords: Malpighia emarginata.

A B S T R A C TThe aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of grafted guava cv. 'Paluma' subjected to different concentrations of salts in irrigation water and nitrogen (N) fertilization. The plants were transplanted to 150 L lysimeters and under field conditions at the Science and Agri-food Technology Center of the Federal University of Campina Grande, in the municipality of Pombal -PB. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme, with three replicates, and the treatments corresponded to five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water -ECw (0.3; 1.1; 1.9; 2.7 and 3.5 dS m -1 ) and four N doses (70, 100, 130 and 160% of the N dose recommended for the crop). The doses equivalent to 100% corresponded to 541.1 mg of N dm -3 of soil. Irrigation water salinity above 0.3 dS m -1 negatively affects the number of leaves, leaf area, stem diameter, dry phytomass of leaves, branches and shoots . A significant interaction between irrigation water salinity and N fertilization was observed only for the number of leaves and leaf area at 120 days after transplanting. N dose above 70% of the recommendation (378.7 mg N dm -3 soil) did not mitigate the deleterious effects caused by salt stress on plant growth.
to evaluate growth and production of cherry tomato cultivated under irrigation with water of different salinity levels and fertilized with different nitrogen (N) doses, in experiment conducted in drainage lysimeters under greenhouse conditions, at the Center for Agrifood Science and Technology of the Federal University of Campina Grande. The statistical design was randomized blocks in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme, with three replicates, and the treatments consisted of five levels of electrical conductivity of water (0.3, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m ). Growth and production variables of cherry tomato decrease linearly from the irrigation water salinity of 0.3 dS m -1 on. The longer exposure of plants to salt stress caused the highest reductions, and the root dry matter, leaf area and the number of clusters are the most sensitive variables. The highest value of plant height at 125 days after transplantation was obtained with the N dose of 139 mg kg -1 of soil. Increasing N doses reduced the effect of salinity on cherry tomato growth at 125 days after transplantation.
The occ urrence of water sources with high concentrations of salts is a common problem in the semi-arid region of north-eastern Brazil. The search for management strategies that can minimize the effect of salt stress on crops is therefore extremely important. As such, this study aimed to evaluate gas exchange and production in the yellow passion fruit 'BRS GA1'as a function of irrigation strategies using brackish water and doses of potassium. The research was carried out under fi eld conditions in São Domingos, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, using a randomized block design in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, with treatments comprising six irrigation strategies using water (irrigat ion with low-salinity water throughout the cycle -WS; irrigation with high-salinity water during the vegetative stage -VE; during the fl owering stage -FL; the fruiting stage -FR; during successive vegetative/fl owering stages -VE/FL; successive vegetative/fruiting stages -VE/FR) and two doses of potassium (60% and 100% of the recommended dose of 345 g K 2 O per plant per year), with four replications and three plants per plot. Two levels of water salinity (1.3 and 4.0 dS m -1 ) were used during different phenological stages of the crop. Irrigation with water at 4.0 dS m -1 reduced the leaf water potential, leaf osmotic potential, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and rate of CO 2 assimilation of the yellow passion fruit, regardless of the irrigation strategy. The continuous salt stress during the vegetative and fl owering stages compromised production in the yellow passion fruit.
