Liquid biopsy is an emerging technology with a potential role in the screening and early detection of lung cancer. Several liquid biopsy-derived biomarkers have been identified and are currently under ongoing investigation. In this article, we review the available data on the use of circulating biomarkers for the early detection of lung cancer, focusing on the circulating tumor cells, circulating cell-free DNA, circulating micro-RNAs, tumor-derived exosomes, and tumor-educated platelets, providing an overview of future potential applicability in the clinical practice. While several biomarkers have shown exciting results, diagnostic performance and clinical applicability is still limited. The combination of different biomarkers, as well as their combination with other diagnostic tools show great promise, although further research is still required to define and validate the role of liquid biopsies in clinical practice.
AbstractThe Scale of Antisocial and Criminal Conducts has been used in several countries as a behavioral measure, showing very consistent results. This paper presents and discusses the analysis of the empirical validity of the factorial structure of its Portuguese version. The sample was comprised of 443 students, 305 female and 138 male, aged between 15 and 23 years (M = 14.8; SD = 1.90; Mo = 20), mostly Portuguese (92%), and 60.6% were college students. Results suggest the psychometric adequacy of instrument, confi rming the bi-factorial structure proposed in previous studies. Advantages of its use with the Portuguese population are discussed.
Micafungin belongs to the antifungal family of echinocandins, which act as noncompetitive inhibitors of the fungal cell wall β-1,3-d-glucan synthase. Since is the most prevalent pathogenic fungus in humans, we study the involvement of micafungin in the modulation of the inflammatory response developed by human tissue macrophages against The MIC for micafungin was 0.016 μg/ml on the SC5314 standard strain. Micafungin induced a drastic reduction in the number of exponential SC5314 viable cells, with the fungicidal effect being dependent on the cellular metabolic activity. Notably, micafungin also caused a structural remodelling of the cell wall, leading to exposure of the β-glucan and chitin content on the external surface. At the higher doses used (0.05 μg/ml), the antifungal also induced the blowing up of budding yeasts. In addition, preincubation with micafungin before exposure to human tissue macrophages enhanced the secretion of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-17A (IL-17A), and IL-10 cytokines. Our results strongly suggest that in treatment with micafungin, in addition to having the expected toxic antifungal effect, it potentiates the immune response, improving the interaction and activation of human macrophages, probably through the unmasking of β-glucans on the cell wall surface.
Within the maternal-fetal relationship, interests may sometimes diverge. In this paper, a pregnant woman's refusal to undergo a caesarean delivery, which was recommended both to save the life of the fetus and to minimize risks to her, is described. The legal aspects involved in the conflict between maternal autonomy and fetal well-being are analysed. The patient requested an abortion because of the poor condition of the fetus; however, according to Spanish legislation, the possibility of abortion was rejected as the pregnancy was in its 27th week. The woman still persisted in her refusal to accept a caesarian delivery. After the medical team sought guidance on the course to follow, the Duty Court authorized a caesarean delivery against the wishes of the patient. From a legal point of view, at stake were the freedom of the woman - expressed by the decision to reject a caesarean delivery - and the life of the unborn child. In clinical treatment, the interests of the fetus are generally aligned with those of the pregnant woman. When they are not, it is the pregnant woman's autonomy that should be respected, and coercion should form no part of treatment, contrary to the decision of this court.
Hepatoid carcinoma of the ovary (HCO) was first reported in 1987 in 5 cases of malignant ovarian tumors which were similar to hepatocarcinoma in the histological analysis. We report the first case in the literature of a patient diagnosed with HCO treated using HIPEC after extensive cytoreductive surgery, and we discuss the value of this therapeutical option in patients with HCO.
