Two field experiments were conducted at the Isabela and Juana Díaz Research Centers in 1982-83 to determine the effect of pigweed (Amaranthus dubius Mart.) density on yield of sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam]. Pigweed densities of 0, 4, 7, 13 and 27 plants/m2 were adjusted by hand at Isabela and those of 0, 11, 23, 45 and 91 plants/m2 were maintained at Juana Díaz. Pigweed population averaged 27 plants/m2 at Isabela and 91 plants/m2 at Juana Díaz under natural infestation. Sweetpotato yield was reduced significantly from 4 plants/m2 at Isabela and from 11 plants/m2 at Juana Díaz. The highest sweetpotato yield was obtained on weed-free plots with 11,823 kg/ha at Isabela and 27,724 kg/ha at Juana Díaz. The greatest yield reduction (91%) resulting from pigweed competition (at Juana Díaz) was at a density of 91 plants/m2. At Isabela, a density of 13 plants/m2 caused the greatest yield reduction (78%). The effect of pigweed on number of root-tubers followed a similar trend as the effect on yield. Dry weight of pigweed per plant was significantly greater at population densities of 4 and 7 plants/m2 at Isabela. At Juana Díaz, dry weight of pigweed was significantly higher at a population density of 11 plants/m2. The regression between sweetpotato yield and the different population densities of pigweed showed an inverse linear relationship at both localities.
Two herbicide experiments were carried out in 1980 to evaluate Alachor and Metribuzin alone or combined for weed control in sweet potato cultivar Miguela at the Isabela and Fortuna Substations, Metribuzin at 1.12 kg ai/ha rate controlled effectively both broadleaf weeds and grasses. A minimum rate of 6.73 kg ai/ha of Alachor was needed for acceptable weed control. Metribuzin at the 1.12 kg al/ha rate in combination with Alachor at the 3.36 kg ai/ha rate provided the best weed control. There was no visible herbicide injury to sweet potato plants at the Isabela Substation. Moderate crop injury as a consequence of Metribuzin application at 2.24 kg ai/ha was apparent at the Fortuna Substation. The highest tuber yield was obtained with Metribuzin at 1.12 kg ai/ha in combination with Alachor at 3.36 kg ai/ha at both Substations. Metribuzin at 1.12 kg ai/ha rate alone or in combination with any other herbicide also produced good tuber yield. Sweet potatoes with standard herbicide treatments, Diphenamid and Chloramben, yielded poorly because of weed competition.
Seven experiments were established at the Juana Díaz and Isabela agricultural experiment substations to evaluate the performance of determinate pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp] genotypes. Significant differences were found for yield, height, flowering date, seed weight and number of seeds per pod in almost all the experiments. Many genotypes performed better than the commercial cultivar 2B-Bushy used as check.
Se ha evaluado la producción micológica de Lepista nuda, llamada "pie azul", un hongo basidiomiceto de pudrición blanca, en sustrato con hojas de olivo para ser aplicada como un sistema de aprovechamiento medioambiental sostenible de la biomasa generada por las almazaras. La seta que desarrolla es un excelente comestible y, gracias a su versátil complejo enzimático, el micelio puede ser aplicado a la descomposición de residuos vegetales procedentes de agroindustrias. El objetivo principal de la investigación es demostrar la posibilidad para producir setas de L. nuda sobre sustrato con hojas de olivo y evaluar su productividad. Los resultados finales han corroborado las hipótesis iniciales. Al cabo de cuatro semanas tras la inoculación, todo el sustrato quedó invadido y colonizado por el hongo.
Nine onion cultivars were evaluated for yield and total solids content. Hybrid onion Granex 33 was the highest yielder with 36,476 kg/ha and 7.6% total solids, while Red Creole was the lowest yielder with only 16,302 kg/ha, and an excellent total solids content of 14%. Texas Grano 502, our highest yielder in previous experiments, ranked second with 33,895 kg/ha and an acceptable total solids percentage of 7.8.
