The vocation crisis, the rise of the "new movements," the burden of international debt, the tension between Catholicism and evangelical Protestantism-all of it comes in for insightful and lively analysis. What I particularly appreciated about Appointment in Rome is its humorous, honest and finally hopeful account of the leadership of the church as it muddles it way toward the new millennium. D
This book is novel in its questioning of the adequacy of interpreting Paul from the perspective of the Reformation and in its application of sociological methods to the New Testament.
