Obtaining of Environmental Parameters in the Semiarid Region of Paraíba by MODIS Data AbstractThe spatial and temporal behavior of the surface net radiation (Rn) has been studied on ecosystems of semi-arid regions of the world and few studies have been intended for semi-arid region of Brazil, specifically in the Caatinga ecosystem. Therefore, the aim of this study was to use a methodology that does not require surface data to estimate the Rn in the semiarid region of Paraíba, from orbital MODIS data, and validate with data measured in experimental areas of Caatinga in recovery and degraded. Considering the results, it can be seen the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, and the same more precise in areas with the barest ground. According to the statistical analysis methodology showed a better quality of fit for the recovery area, with explained variance of 78% and a degraded area of 61%.
A B S T R A C T The aim of this study was to present the variations of albedo, index of normalized difference vegetation (NDVI) and the vegetation index adjusted for soil (SAVI) to the basin of the upper course of the Rio Paraiba, composed of 18 municipalities. The parameters were obtained from images Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Earth platform, with all the necessary computational routines performed by the ERDAS Imagine program 8.5 images related to Julian days were used:. 025, 033, 089, 0.97 , 137, 169, 201, 233, 273, 281, 313, 337, 2013. Albedo were estimated by the methods of Liang (2000) and Tasumi et al. (2008) aimed at the precision of the estimates. Results indicateds show that precipitation may be is identified as a decisive factor controlling the trend of vegetation indices and, indirectly, albedo. The municipality Caraúbas showed the lowest vegetation index, NDVI as much by the SAVI, while the city of São Sebastião do Umbuzeiro showed the highest levels. The month of February had the highest albedo values for municipalities and lower values of NDVI. Moreover, the month of May had the lowest albedo and higher NDVI values and SAVI due to the short rainy season in the region, comprising between February, March and April. The study of energy, water, and carbon exchanges between ecosystems and the atmosphere is important in understanding the role of vegetation in regional microclimates. However, they are still relatively scarce when it comes to Caatinga vegetation. This study aims to identify differences in the dynamics of critical environmental variables such as net radiation (Rn), evapotranspiration (ET), and carbon fluxes (gross primary production, GPP) in contrasting recovered Caatinga (dense Caatinga, DC) and degraded Caatinga (sparse Caatinga, SC) in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. Estimates were performed using the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL), and comparisons between estimated and measured data were conducted based on the coefficient of determination (R2). The fluxes were measured using the Eddy Covariance (EC) method for comparison with the same variables derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data aboard the Terra satellite. The estimates showed higher Rn values for the DC, indicating that this area should have greater energy availability for physical, biological, and chemical processes. The R2 between daily Rn estimates and observations was 0.93. The ET estimated using the SEBAL showed higher differences in relation to the observed values; however, it presented better spatial discrimination of the surface features. The MOD16A2 algorithm, however, presented ET values closer to the observed data and agreed with the seasonality of the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). The DC generally showed higher ET values than the SC, while the MODIS data (GPP MOD17A2H) presented a temporal behavior closer to the observations. The difference between the two areas was more evident in the rainy season. The R2 values between GPP and GPP MOD17A2H were 0.76 and 0.65 for DC and SC, respectively. In addition, the R2 values for GPP Observed and GPP modeled were lower, i.e., 0.28 and 0.12 for the DC and SC, respectively. The capture of CO2 is more evident for the DC considering the whole year, with the SC showing a notable increase in CO2 absorption only in the rainy season. The GPP estimated from the MOD17A2H showed a predominant underestimation but evidenced the effects of land use and land cover changes over the two areas for all seasons.
This study aimed to estimate the surface net radiation (Rn) for the States of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte and validate the results with data measured in validate the results with measurements in experimental recovering (CRec), degraded (CDeg), and preserved (CPres) areas of Caatinga. Seventeen images of the MODIS sensor on board the Terra satellite were selected for CRec and CDeg in the State of Paraíba and twenty-eight images for CPres in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, corresponding to the period of January to December 2014. The MODIS-Terra MOD09A1 and MOD11A2 products were used. Parametric (Shapiro-Wilk) and non-parametric (Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney) tests were applied to understand the patterns. Statistical error indices were applied to verify the accuracy of the estimates in relation to the observed values. Only the measured albedo (α_meas) met the assumption of normality. According to mean absolute percentage error statistics, the model used to estimate the albedo was classified as inappropriate for CPres and CRec ( 25%), while it was satisfactory for CDeg (15-25%). Significant differences between observed and estimated values were absent only for the variable Rn in the three observation sites. The good performance of Rn estimates confirms the efficiency of the application of the method in semiarid regions.
Studies on the use and land cover are very important and report on changes in the earth's surface, often caused by human action. In this context, this study aimed to characterize the use and land cover in the state of Paraiba. A time series of products (MCD12Q1) the sensor Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for the period 2003 to 2012. We used the classification of the type 3, which takes into account the leaf area index was used (LAI) and photosynthetically active radiation fraction (fPAR). An adaptation of the product classification was made, which is global, for the types of vegetation in the state of Paraiba. The results show a predominance of Savannah coverage (Caatinga) comprising the mesoregions the Sertão and Borborema. The mesoregions do Agreste and Litoral presented in the first three years of the series, a denser vegetation of broadleaf crops (wet forest), Grasses / cereals (transition vegetation) and shrubs (Caatinga tree). In addition, urban areas increased over the study period. The product used can be useful for monitoring the soil cover of the organs of state environmental management.
