La tuberculosis es considerada una enfermedad de gran potencial de infección que ataca principalmente los pulmones. Se contagia a través de la diseminación de gotas de saliva que contienen la bacteria que causa la tuberculosis las cuales viajan por el aire al momento de estornudar o toser. El avance de la enfermedad se relaciona con factores de riesgo externos (exógenos) e internos (endógenos). Los factores exógenos logran acentuar la progresión de la exposición a la infección, entre los cuales la carga bacilar en el esputo y la proximidad de un individuo a un caso de tuberculosis infecciosa son factores clave. De manera similar, los factores endógenos conducen a la progresión de la infección a la tuberculosis activa. Junto con los factores de riesgo bien establecidos (como el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH), la desnutrición y la edad temprana), las variables emergentes como la diabetes, la contaminación del aire en interiores, el alcohol, el uso de fármacos inmunosupresores y el humo del tabaco juegan un papel importante en ambos factores a nivel individual y poblacional. Adicionalmente los factores socioeconómicos y de comportamiento aumentan la susceptibilidad a la infección. Grupos específicos como los trabajadores de la salud y la población indígena también corren un mayor riesgo de infección y enfermedad de tuberculosis.
El crecimiento y desarrollo integral del individuo desde la infancia hasta la adolescencia resume el contexto y ámbito de aplicación de la pediatría. El cuidado y atención que les brinda esta rama de la medicina a las personas desde el nacimiento hasta la adolescencia en lo concerniente a la salud física, mental y emocional se encuentran entre los fines más elevados de la ciencia médica por cuanto se trata de una medida de protección de la especie humana ya que el crecimiento y desarrollo de un niño sano en su integralidad cuerpo, mente y espíritu sienta las bases para su posterior conversión en un adulto con pleno dominio de todas sus capacidades y cualidades humanas. El presente libro, como su nombre lo exterioriza, contiene temas esenciales de pediatría, a saber: el niño sano, crecimiento físico y desarrollo motor del niño, nutrición infantil y salud, alteraciones en el neurodesarrollo infantil, alergias y enfermedades infecciosas en la infancia y urgencias pediátricas, está pensado como un material de apoyo en la tarea que realizan profesionales de la red básica de salud, personal médico y de enfermería pediátrica y no pediátrica, padres, maestros, estudiantes por lo que su alcance y profundidad se puede definir como básico. Es decir, contiene conocimientos esenciales que todo profesional de atención primaria de salud debe saber, extensivo también a aquellas personas que acompañan de una manera u otra el crecimiento y desarrollo de los niños por la gran ayuda que estas brindan en la vigilancia y el control de un desarrollo normal.
Las enfermedades gastrointestinales representan la afección más común en niños. Todo el que esté relacionado con los cuidados infantiles desde el nacimiento aprende y procura cuidar la alimentación e higiene del infante precisamente por controlar el contagio de enfermedades a través de microorganismos y bacterias. La lactancia materna es la principal opción para la alimentación del neonato hasta los 2 años de edad. Como en otras enfermedades infecciosas, los esfuerzos realizados en la prevención de las infecciones gastrointestinales han supuesto una constante labor investigadora en las últimas décadas, teniendo en cuenta la importancia, que como causantes de enfermedad y en muchos casos mortalidad, han tenido los patógenos intestinales en todo el mundo, especialmente en aquellos países con peores condiciones sociosanitarias. Nos hemos dispuesto a realizar una investigación bibliográfica a fin de conseguir con especificidad las investigaciones publicadas en artículos científicos respecto al diagnóstico y tratamiento de infecciones gastrointestinales cuyo extracto plasmaremos como resultado de esta investigación. Es de suma importancia los niveles de higiene, el acceso al agua potable, el cumplimiento de la inmunización pediátrica a las edades determinadas por el Sistema de Salud, así como la corresponsabilidad del Estado para colocar a disposición las vacunas correspondientes accesibles a toda la sociedad para controlar los niveles de morbilidad y mortalidad ocasionados por las infecciones gastrointestinales. Entre discusión y conclusiones encontramos que los cuidados pediátricos tienen varios orígenes entre los que se encuentran los socioeconómicos debido a la disponibilidad de agua potable o en su defecto, medios para esterilizarla, el tiempo y la influencia social de la madre para amamantar al niño al menos durante 2 años debido a que se ha comprobado los beneficios fisiológicos de la leche materna para la salud de infante, que luego se traducen en un ahorro para el Estado.
