Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission is dedicated to measuring temporal variations of the Earth's gravity field. In this study, the Stokes coefficients made available by Groupe de Recherche en Géodésie Spatiale (GRGS) at a 10-day interval were converted into equivalent water height (EWH) for a ~4-year period in the Amazon basin (from July-2002 to May-2006). The seasonal amplitudes of EWH signal are the largest on the surface of Earth and reach ~ 1250mm at that basin's center. Error budget represents ~130 mm of EWH, including formal errors on Stokes coefficient, leakage errors (12 ~ 21 mm) and spectrum truncation (10 ~ 15 mm). Comparison between in situ river level time series measured at 233 groundbased hydrometric stations (HS) in the Amazon basin and vertically-integrated EWH derived from GRACE is carried out in this paper. Although EWH and HS measure different water bodies, in most of the cases a high correlation (up to ~80%) is detected between the HS series and EWH series at the same site. This correlation allows adjusting linear relationships between in situ and GRACE-based series for the major tributaries of the Amazon river. The regression coefficients decrease from up to down stream along the rivers reaching the theoretical value 1 at the Amazon's mouth in the Atlantic Ocean. The variation of the regression coefficients versus the distance from estuary is analysed for the largest rivers in the basin. Road networks are monitored to evaluate their decay level and the performances regarding ride comfort, vehicle rolling noise, fuel consumption, etc. In this study, a novel inertial sensor-based system is proposed using a low-cost inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a global positioning system (GPS) module, which are connected to a Raspberry Pi Zero W board and embedded inside a vehicle to indirectly monitor the road condition. To assess the level of pavement decay, the comfort index awz defined by the ISO 2631 standard was used. Considering 21 km of roads with different levels of pavement decay, validation measurements were performed using the novel sensor, a high performance inertial based navigation sensor, and a road surface profiler. Therefore, comparisons between awz determined with accelerations measured on the two different inertial sensors are made; in addition, also correlations between awz, and typical pavement indicators such as international roughness index, and ride number were also performed. The results showed very good correlations between the awz values calculated with the two inertial devices (R2 = 0.98). In addition, the correlations between awz values and the typical pavement indices showed promising results (R2 = 0.83–0.90). The proposed sensor may be assumed as a reliable and easy-to-install method to assess the pavement conditions in urban road networks, since the use of traditional systems is difficult and/or expensive.

Accurate and rapid determination of trypanosomatids is essential in epidemiological surveillance and therapeutic studies. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been shown to be a useful and powerful technique to identify bacteria, fungi, metazoa and human intact cells with applications in clinical settings. Here, we developed and optimized a MALDI-TOF MS method to profile trypanosomatids. trypanosomatid cells were deposited on a MALDI target plate followed by addition of matrix solution. The plate was then subjected to MALDI-TOF MS measurement to create reference mass spectra library and unknown samples were identified by pattern matching using the BioTyper software tool. Several m/z peaks reproducibly and uniquely identified trypanosomatids species showing the potentials of direct identification of trypanosomatids by MALDI-TOF MS. Moreover, this method discriminated different life stages of Trypanosoma cruzi, epimastigote and bloodstream trypomastigote and Trypanosoma brucei, procyclic and bloodstream. T. cruzi Discrete Typing Units (DTUs) were also discriminated in three clades. However, it was not possible to achieve enough resolution and software-assisted identification at the strain level. Overall, this study shows the importance of MALDI-TOF MS for the direct identification of trypanosomatids and opens new avenues for mass spectrometry-based detection of parasites in biofluids. The combination of physical and geometric heights, required for geodetic purposes, uses Global Geopotential Models (GGMs), local geoid, or quasigeoid models. The geoid height and the height anomaly, provided by GGMs, are not accurate enough for most engineering applications. Considering the normal height system of Brazil and the physical concepts of the involved reference surfaces, a quasigeoid model is more appropriate than the current Brazilian geoid model MAPGEO2015. This paper shows the determination of the geoid and the quasigeoid models for São Paulo state using the updated gravimetric data and the new system of the normal height of the 2018 Brazilian Vertical Reference Frame (BVRF). The computation of the quasigeoid model was performed by numerical integration through the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The Molodensky gravity anomaly was determined in a 5’ grid and reduced and restored using the Residual Terrain Model (RTM) technique and the XGM2019e GGM truncated at degree and order 250 and 720. The geoid model was derived from the Bouguer gravity anomalies. The quasigeoid model validation has shown a Root Mean Square (RMS) difference of 18 cm compared with the Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements in the levelling network.

A referência ainda utilizada para a maioria dos dados gravimétricos do mundo é a International Gravity Standardization Net 1971 (IGSN-71). Estima-se que esta rede, estabelecida por gravímetros relativos e dispositivos pendulares, possui precisão de 100 μGal. Em função do surgimento e da comercialização dos gravímetros, baseados em interferometria a laser, queda-livre e supercondutores, tornou-se possível determinar a aceleração de gravidade (g) com precisão inferior a 10 μGal. Esse e outros avanços tecnológicos fez com que a International Association of Geodesy (IAG) estabelecesse convenções direcionadas a padronizar e a homogeneizar mundialmente os sistemas altimétrico e gravimétrico. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar e quantificar a conexão das medições absolutas do Sistema Gravimétrico de Referência (SGR) à estrutura gravimétrica do estado de São Paulo. A conexão das observações absolutas revelou uma discrepância máxima de 250 μGal. Por outro lado, mais de 80% das observações se encontram com diferença inferior a 100 μGal. A influência dos resultados sobre as anomalias de Bouguer e de ar-livre é apresentada.
