The measurement of leaf area by linear parameters is a useful tool when plants cannot be destroyed for direct measurement. The objectives of this study were to establish equations to estimate the leaf area of greenhouse-cucumber and to evaluate the effects of salinity and grafting on this estimative. Nongrafted cucumber seedlings, cv. 'Hokushin', were transplanted in a greenhouse and were irrigated with water of different salinities (1.0, 3.2 and 5.0 dS m -1 ). In the second growing period, the same cultivar was grafted on Cucurbita spp. and the plants were irrigated with water of 1.4, 3.0 and 5.3 dS m -1 . Leaves of different sizes were collected from both experiments and leaf area was determined by an integrating area meter. Leaf length (L) and width (W) were also recorded. An equation for estimating the leaf area from L and W was developed for a given salinity level or grafting condition and estimated well the area of leaves collected in the other treatments. The leaf area (LA) of cucumber 'Hokushin' could be estimated using the equation LA = 0.88LW -4.27, for any grafting and salinity conditions. Non-destructive methods of leaf area measurement are useful for small plant populations, such as experiments with potted plants, and allow the measurement of the same plant several times during the growing period. A methodology was developed to estimate the leaf area index (LAI) of cucumber and tomato plants through the evaluation of the leaf area distribution pattern (LADP) of the plants and the relative height of the leaves in the plants. Plant and leaf height, as well as the length and width of all leaves were measured and the area of some leaves was determined by a digital area meter. The obtained regression equations were used to estimate the leaf area for all relative heights along the plant. The LADP adjusted to a quadratic model for both crops and LAI were estimated by measuring the length and width of the leaves located at the relative heights representing the mean leaf area of the plants. The LAI estimations presented high precision and accuracy when the proposed methodology was used resulting in time and effort savings and being useful for both crops.
Industrial tomato is the most important vegetable crop of the Brazilian agribusiness. Few researches have evaluated the tolerance of this crop to saline stress. In this study, the effects of five levels of salinity of the irrigation water (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 dS m-1) and two equivalent proportions of Na:Ca:Mg (1:1:0.5 and 7:1:0.5) were tested on yield and quality of fruits of industrial tomato, cultivar IPA 6. Seedlings were transplanted in rhizotrons and grown under plastic covering until fruit ripening. Volume of water for daily irrigations was determined by the difference between the applied and drained volume in the previous irrigation. Unitary increase of water salinity above 1 dS m-1 reduced the commercial and total yield by 11.9 and 11.0%, respectively, and increased the concentration of soluble solids and the titratable acidity of the fruits by 13.9 and 9.4%, respectively. The increase of the proportion of sodium reduced the total and marketable yield, the number of marketable fruits and pulp yield. Water of moderate salinity, with low concentration of sodium, can be used in the irrigation of the industrial tomato, without significant yield losses.
Emergence and seedling growth may be severely affected by salinity, mainly for sensitive crops. The objective of the present study was to verify the tolerance of corn and soybean to the irrigation water salinity (EC i ) during the emergence and initial development stages. Seeds of corn, hybrid 'AG-6690', and soybean, cv. 'Conquista', were sown in pots containing material from a sandyloam soil and irrigated with water of increasing salinity levels, from 0.3 to 5.9 dS m -1 , giving nine levels of EC i obtained by the addition of an equivalent proportion of sodium and calcium chloride, except for EC i = 0.3 dS m -1 (tap water). Emergence of corn was not affected by salinity but seedling development was reduced for EC i above 1.5 dS m -1 . Emergence and growth of soybean were reduced by water salinity and the crop was more tolerant during the emergence (EC i = 2.7 dS m -1 ) than in the initial development (EC i = 1.0 dS m , totalizando nove níveis de CE i obtidos pela adição de cloreto de sódio e de cálcio em proporções equivalentes, exceto para CE i = 0,3 dS m -1 (água de torneira). ABSTRACTThe improper irrigation management may result in the accumulation of salts in the soil profile, which intensity depends on the irrigation water quality, the leaching fraction adopted and on the evapotranspiration demand of the region. The objective of the present study was to study the physical and chemical characteristics of the soils in the irrigated district of California, located in the northwest of the State of Sergipe. Thus, soil sampling were made in 54 lots, corresponding to 16.4% of the lots of this district. The highest salt and sodium concentrations occurred in the shallowest soil layer (0-0.2m), evidencing the lack of an appropriate irrigation management in order to control the salinity build up. The increasing of the soil pH was significantly correlated to the exchangeable sodium percentage, reaching values over 9.5. Significant positive correlations were observed between the electrical conductivity and the Ca and Mg content, indicating that salts of both ions could be accumulating in soil by the capillary rise of the water table, associated to the lack of leaching and drainage.
Production and fruit quality ABSTRACTThe application of high doses of fertilizers could increase the tolerance of crops to salts by reducing the nutritional imbalance caused by salinity. In order to test this hypothesis, a study was conducted to evaluate the production and quality of tomato fruits, hybrid Facundo, irrigated with saline water, under different doses of N and K. The work was conducted in a greenhouse and the treatments were composed of the combination of three levels of N (7.5, 15.0 and 22.5 g per plant of N) and three levels of K (8, 16 and 24 g per plant of K 2 O) applied through drip fertigation, in the 3 x 3 factorial design, with five replications. Also the salts sodium chloride and calcium chloride were also added to irrigation water for obtaining an electrical conductivity of the irrigation water of 9.5 dS m -1 . Effects of the treatments were not verified on the production components (yield, size and mean weight of fruits) nor on some parameters of the quality of the fruits (concentration of nutrients, soluble solids and titratable acidity), the concentration of K increased and the ratio Na/K reduced in the fruits with increasing dose of K. It was concluded that the application of high doses of N and K did not contribute to the increase the tolerance of tomato to salinity.
