A new species of cixiid planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) in the genus Oecleus Stål, Oecleus sergipensis n. sp., is described from Sergipe State, Brazil. This new taxon is associated with coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) and date palm (Phoenix L). The species was detected in Auchenorrhyncha surveys to find potential vectors of lethal yellowing type syndrome. This is the first report of the genus Oecleus in Brazil. Sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcoding region was obtained and accessioned into GenBank.
Thus, it is necessary the use of irrigation to meet the water demand of the crop, but both excess and deficit soil water can affect the production and fruit quality. In this context, it was evaluated, with this work, agronomic aspects of tomato "Caline IPA 6" grown under different rates of fluid replacement in semiarid area of Paraiba. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Sector of Fruit Crops and Plant Ecophysiology of Paraíba State University, campus Catolé do Rocha (PB), where 5 levels of water replacement were studied (50, 75, 100, 125 and 150% of ETo) in randomized complete block design with random 4 replications and 9 plants per plot. The ETo was estimated based on the Penman-Monteith model. Were evaluated agronomic and productive variables in tomato plants. The irrigation depths significantly influenced the characteristics analyzed, being evidenced that the agronomic aspects of tomato "Caline IPA 6" are positively affected with irrigation levels above 100% of the need for culture. The variation in the water replacement in the consumption of tomato affects yield components with greater intensity in fruit number and yield per plant.
The sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is a plant species that has many applications today, and is considered one of the plants that has a maximum potential production. The objective of this study was to evaluate photosynthetic aspects of sunflower cultivars, under different water regimes. The study was conducted in a greenhouse at the premises belonging to the Department of Agricultural Engineering UFCG, conducted in a completely randomized design in a factorial 3 x 4 (three varieties and four levels of irrigation) with four replications. Were used vessels with a capacity of 100 L, having the water content of the soil monitored daily by means of a capacitance probe, Model 2000 ® DIVINER, targeted treatments in 100% of field capacity (CC). The characteristics evaluated were: chlorophyll fluorescence, content of chlorophyll a, b and total, and index relative SPAD. There was statistical difference among cultivars for index relative chlorophyll and content of carotenoids, and between water regimes on the content of chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll. A correlation between the chlorophyll index (SPAD) and total chlorophyll content. Water regimes did not alter the fluorescence and the content of chlorophyll a, however, altered the levels of chlorophyll b and total in sunflower plants.
Burkholderia sp. is a bacterial genus extremely versatile in the environment and has been reported for a great potential to promote plant growth via different mechanisms. Here we evaluate the plant growth-promoting mechanisms in twenty-six Burkholderia strains. Strains were evaluated for their ability to promote plant growth by means of: indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production under different conditions of pH, salt stress and the presence or absence of L-tryptophan; exopolysaccharides (EPS) production and quorum sensing (ALH). The strains were also characterized in terms of their genetic variability and species identification through Sanger sequencing. Then, the bacteria most responsive in the greatest number of plant-growth promotion mechanisms were selected for a corn seed germination test. All bacteria synthesized IAA in medium with 0.0 or 5.0 mM of L-tryptophan in combination with either 1 or 5% of NaCl, and pH values of either 4.5 or 7.2. The EPS production was confirmed for 61.54% of the bacterial strains. Quorum sensing also occurred in 92.3% of the selected bacteria. The Jaccard similarity coefficient revealed 16 clusters with high genetic variability between bacterial strains. Bacterial strains were assigned to seven species: B. anthina, B. cepacia, B. gladioli, B. ambifaria, B. graminis, B. heleia, and Burkholderia spp. The corn seed bacterization did not affect the germination velocity index (GSI), as well as the first count of germinated seeds (FC). However, inoculations formulated with B. heleia strain G28, B. gladioli strain UAGC723, and B. graminis strain UAGC348 promoted significant increases in root length, seedling height and fresh and dry seedling phytomass, respectively. These results indicate the high biotechnological potential of several strains in the genus Burkholderia sp. as seed inoculants, favoring germination and seedling initial development.
