A new species of Oecleus Stål (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea: Cixiidae) from coconut in Brazil

Abstract: A new species of cixiid planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) in the genus Oecleus Stål, Oecleus sergipensis n. sp., is described from Sergipe State, Brazil. This new taxon is associated with coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) and date palm (Phoenix L). The species was detected in Auchenorrhyncha surveys to find potential vectors of lethal yellowing type syndrome. This is the first report of the genus Oecleus in Brazil. Sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcoding region was obta… Show more

“…n. can carry palm infecting phytoplasmas and assess the role it plays in the epidemiology of LY in Jamaica. In similar survey work conducted in Brazil, Oecleus sergipensis Bartlett, Dos Passos, Gonçalves da Silva, Diniz & Dollet was a newly discovered species from coconut palm (Bartlett et al 2018). While LY is not known from Brazil and no specimens of O. sergipensis were tested for phytoplasma, Brazil is at risk for the introduction and spread of LY due to large scale coconut production in Northern Brazil as well as the presence of H. crudus in the region (Silva et al 2019).…”

“…The genus Oecleus Stål, 1862 is a large taxon in the tribe Oecleini and is widespread throughout the new world (Bartlett et al 2014(Bartlett et al , 2018. The Oecleini are recognized by lacking spines on the hind tibiae.…”

“…In our studies in Sergipe, no H. crudus specimens were found, although a high number of individuals of a new species of cixiid in the genus Oecleus Stål, belonging to the same family and tribe as H. crudus (Cixiidae: Oecleini), was captured. This new species, O. sergipensis , was described recently (Bartlett et al ., ), and is a potential vector of phytoplasmas, including coconut LY phytoplasmas. Oecleus species also are reported from coconut plantations in Mexico.…”

“…La distribución de O. snowi fue revisada por Kramer (1977), aunque sólo para el norte de México. Aunque gran parte de la fauna de Oecleus mesoamericana aún no se ha estudiado sistemáticamente, esta especie es particularmente importante como potencial vector de fitoplasmas del 16SrIV (Bartlett et al 2018). Estos resultados resaltan la importancia que puede tener esta especie como vector putativo de fitoplasmas en las plantaciones de cocotero.…”
