The experimental design was randomized blocks factorial 3 x 4, with three replications. In the factor A allocated to the three varieties of cowpea BRS Guariba, BR17 Gurguéia and BRS Marataoã and the B four irrigation levels established in terms of fractions of the reference evapotranspiration (40, 60, 80 and 100% of ETo) and three replicates. Gas exchanges were determined from measurements of internal CO2 concentration, transpiration, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic rate, instantaneous efficiency of water use and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency. As for yield components was evaluated mass of pods, number of seeds per pod, weight of 100 grains and grain yield. The cowpea cultivar 'BRS Guariba', regardless of irrigation, has better performance of gas exchange with a positive impact on production components. The highest rates of physiological cultivars 'BRS Guariba' and 'BRS Marataoã' blades were found with 40% of ETo, which may reflect more tolerance to drought.
The number of flowers, number of aborted flowers, number of fruits per plant, productivity and water use efficiency were higher when plants were irrigated with replenishment rates between 100 and 133% of crop water consumption. The tomato cultivar IPA Caline 6 can be grown in greenhouse with water levels between 100 and 133% of ETc.
Core Ideas Performance of salicylic acid to reduce the effects of water deficit in cowpea seedlings. Oxidative protection in cowpea seedlings under water deficit. Salicylic acid improve the biochemical metabolism in cowpea seedlings. The cowpea cultivar BRS Itaim is suitable for semiarid regions by its tolerance to water deficit. Drought stress is one of the greatest problems facing agriculture and a critical factor affecting the success or failure of agricultural activity. Application of an elicitor substance to plants, such as salicylic acid (SA), might be a strategy to induce tolerance to water deficit by acting especially on the regulation of stress‐responsive mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] seedlings as a function of water deficit and exogenous application of SA. Six cowpea cultivars were subjected to three seed treatments before sowing (WS = without soaking; SPW = soaking seeds in purified water, and SSA = soaking seeds in SA) and five water potentials induced by polyethylene glycol 6000 solution (–1.0, –0.8, –0.6, –0.4, and 0.0 MPa) during germination and early growth. Increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) improved the growth of cowpea seedlings under water deficit. Antioxidant activity of cowpea seedlings increased after seeds were soaked in SA, especially for cultivar BRS Itaim. BRS Itaim was more tolerant under low water potential after SA treatment and showed increase in SOD, CAT, and APX activities. Soaking seeds in SA solution (10−5 M) can be used as a strategy to induce tolerance to water deficit during seed germination and early growth of cowpea seedlings.
Cowpea is a crop with great economic, social and food importance in semi-arid regions, but its production is drastically reduced by the water deficit in these regions, requiring better management strategies that allow the crop’s production. This study therefore aimed to evaluate the photosynthetic efficiency and production of cowpea cultivars under deficit irrigation replacement levels. The experiment tested three cowpea genotypes (G1 = ‘BRS Aracé’, G2 = ‘BR 17 Gurguéia’ and G3 = ‘BRS Marataoã’) and four irrigation depths (40, 60, 80 and 100% of ETc), resulting in a 3 x 4 factorial scheme, arranged in randomized complete blocks design with four replicates. During the experiment, the gas exchanges, chlorophyll a fluorescence and production of the cowpea genotypes under deficit irrigation were evaluated. Carbon fixation in the photosynthetic metabolism of cowpea plants was reduced by accentuated water deficit, regardless of the genotype. The low stress severity was indicated by the lack of effects on chlorophyll fluorescence, indicating that the reduction in the rate of carbon assimilation was due to the stomatal effects. The irrigation with 80% of ETc can be used in the cultivation of the respective cultivars, but with small losses in the production. Among the genotypes, ‘BRS Marataoã’ stands out with respect to yield, with higher values for weight of pods and green beans.
Thus, it is necessary the use of irrigation to meet the water demand of the crop, but both excess and deficit soil water can affect the production and fruit quality. In this context, it was evaluated, with this work, agronomic aspects of tomato "Caline IPA 6" grown under different rates of fluid replacement in semiarid area of Paraiba. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Sector of Fruit Crops and Plant Ecophysiology of Paraíba State University, campus Catolé do Rocha (PB), where 5 levels of water replacement were studied (50, 75, 100, 125 and 150% of ETo) in randomized complete block design with random 4 replications and 9 plants per plot. The ETo was estimated based on the Penman-Monteith model. Were evaluated agronomic and productive variables in tomato plants. The irrigation depths significantly influenced the characteristics analyzed, being evidenced that the agronomic aspects of tomato "Caline IPA 6" are positively affected with irrigation levels above 100% of the need for culture. The variation in the water replacement in the consumption of tomato affects yield components with greater intensity in fruit number and yield per plant.
-The intensive cultivation of vegetables with frequent chemical fertilization may cause accumulation of nutrients in the soil. This, in turn, may reduce crop yields and damage the environment due to contamination of ground water and rivers. Thus, to increase the effects of P (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg ha -1 of P 2 O 5 ) and K (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg ha -1 of K 2 O) doses on the growth and productivity of radish cultivars (Sakata 19 and Sakata 25) in a soil with high levels of these nutrients, two experiments were conducted in randomized blocks with the factors cultivars and doses arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial design with three replications. Number of leaves per plant, leaf area, shoot and root dry mass, total and commercial productivity, percentage of cracked roots and P and K contents in the plant and in the soil were evaluated. The Sakata 19 cultivar performed better than the Sakata 25 in both experiments. The fertilization with P or K did not influence the growth and the productivity of both radish cultivars. Therefore, both cultivars of radish evaluated do not need to be fertilized with P and K when planted in a Latosol with high levels of these nutrients. Keywords: Cultivars. Phosphorus. Potassium. Productivity. Raphanus sativus L..
