A alimentação é um tema de estudos que vem atraindo o interesse de diversas disciplinas. Além das preocupações com a alimentação saudável e com distúrbios alimentares, recorrentes em estudos no campo da saúde, o consumo de alimentos tem atraído a atenção de pesquisadores do campo do marketing e dos estudos de consumo. As conversas sobre preparação de pratos, o compartilhamento de fotos de pratos finalizados inundam a mídia e as redes sociais e motivam pesquisadores a procurarem compreender mais profundamente a alimentação. Sendo assim, novas perspectivas estão sendo incorporadas à esta(s) prática(s) de consumo e, em concomitância, às pesquisas de consumo de comida. O objetivo do presente ensaio teórico é dar luz a alguns aspectos da história da alimentação e a conceitos de alimento e comida. Consideramos importante explorar essa discussão como forma de construir uma compreensão mais profunda a respeito dos aspectos simbólicos e culturais do consumo de comida. Dessa forma, trouxemos uma reflexão a respeito da história da alimentação e história da alimentação no Brasil e, em seguida, apresentamos uma discussão a respeito da distinção entre alimento e comida. Ao fim, sustentamos que o conhecimento sobre tais temas é importante, pois pode nos levar a novos entendimentos acerca do consumo de alimentos e comida. Consideramos este tipo de conhecimento fundamental para produção científica no campo de estudos de consumo de comida.
