Language has a social function to make connection between human beings. Without language, people seem to be impossible to interact with others in their daily communication. In order to sustain the communication well, speakers should be able to choose strategies to have polite conversation. Often politeness strategies are affected by cultural convention, which is based on community’s social values. However, every society operates a normative notion of their own politeness, which is not the same for all interlocutors, situations and cultures. In Javanese norm, for instance, the linguistic choice is often influenced by the addressee’s age, status, position, relationship, social constraints and gender. This essay will first summarize and comment on some of the salient aspects in Coulmas’ article entitled ‘Politeness: cultural dimension of linguistic choice’, part of his book chapters in ‘Sociolinguistics: The study of speakers’ choices’ (2013). As an English teacher, we should be aware of this difference so that we could introduce the politeness strategies in the target culture to the students.ABSTRAKBahasa memiliki fungsi sosial dalam menjaga hubungan dengan sesama individu. A research about antibacterial activity test of johar plant leaf extract (Cassia siamea Lamk.) using several levels of solvent polarity has been implemented. This study aims to determine whether the antibacterial compounds in the leaves is polar, non-polar or semi-polar, and to determine the highest inhibition level of johar leaf extract on both the gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae) and gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus). The maceration method was used in this research with 3 levels of solvent polarity namely non-polar, semi-polar and polar. The bacterial activity test was done with diffusion method. The results showed that the johar leaf contains antibacterial compounds which are polar and semi-polar. The highest inhibition level was obtained at johar leaf ethanol extract for Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteu and Shigella dysentriae of 14.9, 12.9, 12, and 7.2 mm, respectively. Keywords: Antibacterial, Inhibition Level, Johar Leaf Extract
<p>Waste management in the Dasan Agung Market in Mataram City still uses conventional patterns. This pattern is not in line with the NTB Province policy that launched the concept of zero waste in 2019-2023. One approach that can support the program is the 3R method of waste management. This study aims to develop a waste management plan using the 3R approach. The method used in this study is the observation method, which is observing the current conditions and measuring the generation and composition of waste. The technique of determining the sample and measurement time and the procedure refers to SNI-19-3964-1995. The results showed that the amount of solid waste generation in Dasan Agung Market was 2.7 m3 / day and the weight of solid waste was 467 kg / day. Waste composition was obtained by organic waste 52.60% and inorganic waste 47.40%. TPS 3R is planned with an area of 110 m2, namely 74 m2 for composting area and 36 m2 for sorting and handling inorganic waste, and residual waste. The composting system implemented is using the drum method with a capacity of 100 liters, a total of 307 pieces. Waste Management Planning using the 3R Approach is capable of handling 80% of the waste, and 20% of the residue is disposed of in the landfill.</p>
The present inquiry is designed to investigate the use of illocutionary acts in Nouman Ali Khan’s speeches and to analyse the functions of the types of illocutionary acts from the speeches. The data were analysed by using the textual analysis and open coding from three speeches by Nouman Ali Khan in a seminar titled “When Muslims Works Together” at the Islamic Association of North Texas (IANT). They are classified into some categories based on Searle’s theory. The finding of this study showed that (1) there are four types of illocutionary acts; representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives, (2) the illocutionary type of representatives is the most frequent types of illocutionary act appeared in the speeches, i.e., 306 utterances or 63.22% with five functions; informing, stating, describing, reminding and concluding, (3) then, the second most frequently types of illocutionary act appeared in the speeches was the illocutionary directives, i.e., 144 utterances or 29.75% with five functions; suggesting, commanding, inviting, forbidding and questioning, (4) the illocutionary commissives occurred in 22 utterances or 4.55% with two functions; promising and warning., (5) the illocutionary expressives are found in 12 utterances or 2.48% with two functions; praising and expressing hope or wish. This study implies the need for knowledge distribution of Searle’s classic speech acts concept within the scope of other contemporary Muslim preachers.
