A fitoterapia é uma prática terapêutica antiga que consiste na utilização de plantas medicinais, sob diferentes técnicas de preparo, para o tratamento ou cura de enfermidades. Na Odontologia, é observado diariamente o medo, a ansiedade, o risco de dor, inflamação e infecções pós-operatórias, frente a procedimentos cirúrgicos, podendo gerar interferências no resultado do tratamento. Diante disso, este estudo tem por objetivo apresentar a fitoterapia como uma terapia alternativa em procedimentos pré e pós-cirúrgicos odontológicos. Trata-se de uma revisão da literatura, a partir da seleção de artigos científicos dos bancos de dados SciELO, MEDLINE, LILACS e PubMed. Observou-se que espécies vegetais como a Punica granatum (romã), Althaea officinalis (malvavisco), Malva sylvestris (malva) e a Matricaria recutita (camomila), são mais comumente estudadas e indicadas na Odontologia, mostrando resultados satisfatórios na solução de afecções dos pacientes. Pode-se concluir que o emprego da fitoterapia em tratamentos pré e pós-cirúrgicos odontológicos é uma opção viável, acessível, econômica e eficaz. Faz-se necessária uma maior disseminação do conhecimento sobre essa terapia entre os acadêmicos e profissionais de Odontologia, bem como mais publicações científicas sobre o uso de plantas medicinais para tratamentos odontológicos.
