A fitoterapia é uma prática terapêutica antiga que consiste na utilização de plantas medicinais, sob diferentes técnicas de preparo, para o tratamento ou cura de enfermidades. Na Odontologia, é observado diariamente o medo, a ansiedade, o risco de dor, inflamação e infecções pós-operatórias, frente a procedimentos cirúrgicos, podendo gerar interferências no resultado do tratamento. Diante disso, este estudo tem por objetivo apresentar a fitoterapia como uma terapia alternativa em procedimentos pré e pós-cirúrgicos odontológicos. Trata-se de uma revisão da literatura, a partir da seleção de artigos científicos dos bancos de dados SciELO, MEDLINE, LILACS e PubMed. Observou-se que espécies vegetais como a Punica granatum (romã), Althaea officinalis (malvavisco), Malva sylvestris (malva) e a Matricaria recutita (camomila), são mais comumente estudadas e indicadas na Odontologia, mostrando resultados satisfatórios na solução de afecções dos pacientes. Pode-se concluir que o emprego da fitoterapia em tratamentos pré e pós-cirúrgicos odontológicos é uma opção viável, acessível, econômica e eficaz. Faz-se necessária uma maior disseminação do conhecimento sobre essa terapia entre os acadêmicos e profissionais de Odontologia, bem como mais publicações científicas sobre o uso de plantas medicinais para tratamentos odontológicos.
O processo saúde-doença compreende amplas variáveis que envolvem o indivíduo e o meio em que vive. Diante da pandemia causada pelo novo coronavírus, da síndrome respiratória aguda grave e das necessidades de saúde da população no contexto do território, este estudo teve como objetivo conhecer a percepção de usuários do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) sobre os determinantes de saúde e doença, aliado à perspectiva do controle social e dos direitos e deveres dos usuários. Trata-se de um relato de experiência elaborado no contexto de atuação da equipe de residentes multiprofissionais em Atenção Básica/Saúde da Família e Comunidade da Prefeitura Municipal de Mossoró. Foram realizadas três etapas, constituídas por planejamento e pesquisa bibliográfica acerca do controle social e participação da comunidade no SUS; encontro com agentes comunitários de saúde para o (re)conhecimento ampliado do território; e encontro com membros da comunidade para discussão dos determinantes de saúde e doença no território. Os usuários participantes manifestaram uma visão ampliada do conceito de saúde, com menção a problemas ambientais e sociais que impactam as condições da saúde em sua comunidade. Pela experiência da ação, pode-se observar que a população sente a necessidade de momentos em que possa ser ouvida e, com os profissionais de saúde, debater os problemas e possíveis soluções para a comunidade, compreendendo sua corresponsabilização no processo de promoção da saúde nos âmbitos individual e coletivo, estabelecendo vínculos construtivos.
Os desgastes dentários conhecidos como atrição, abfração, erosão e abrasão, são considerados alterações fisiológicas ou patológicas, levando em consideração seus fatores etiológicos. Desta forma, o presente estudo objetivou avaliar a frequência de desgastes dentários em praticantes de exercícios físicos de musculação do município de Caicó, Rio Grande do Norte e o conhecimento dos mesmos sobre estes desgastes. A amostra foi constituída por 260 praticantes de musculação de 5 academias do município e para a coleta dos dados utilizou-se questionários e exame clínico intraoral. Foi realizada análise descritiva dos dados e para avaliar a relação entre os desgastes dentários e as variáveis independentes foram utilizados os testes estatísticos: t de Student, Qui-quadrado de Pearson e Correlação de Pearson, considerando um nível de significância de 5%. A presença de pelo menos um tipo de desgaste foi observada em 78,9% dos praticantes de musculação. Destes, 65,8% tinham apenas um tipo de desgaste, 12,3% dois tipos e 0,8% três tipos. Dos desgastes dentários estudados, a atrição e a abfração foram os mais frequentes, sendo 80,9% e 15,8% respectivamente. Dos praticantes, 91,9% não tinham conhecimento sobre os desgastes dentários. Concluiu-se que com o avanço da idade, maior a frequência de atrição e abfração. A abfração foi mais frequente naqueles que praticavam musculação até 4 vezes na semana. A atrição e a abfração foram as lesões dentárias de desgaste mais desconhecidas, podendo implicar em deficiências na prevenção dessas lesões.
Objetivo: Analisar a atividade antibacteriana de extratos hidroalcoólicos de folhas de mastruz, coité e de ambos associados, em cepas de Streptococcus mutans, e Staphylococcus aureus resistente e sensível à meticilina (MRSA e MSSA). Métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa in vitro, tendo a atividade antibacteriana determinada pela técnica de difusão em poços, onde placas de Petri com as bactérias semeadas receberam 100 µL dos extratos para posterior medição dos halos de inibição. Foi utilizado como controle positivo o digluconato de clorexidina 0,12% e 2%. O teste de Mann Whitney foi utilizado para verificar diferença antimicrobiana entre cada extrato e a clorexidina para cada tipo de bactéria. Resultados: O coité apresentou atividade antibacteriana expressiva sobre as bactérias S. aureus (MRSA e MSSA) e S. mutans, com efeito superior ao digluconato de clorexidina 0,12% para o MSSA (p=0,043) e equivalentes para o MRSA (p=0,197) e S. mutans (p=0,121). O mastruz não desenvolveu atividade antibacteriana sobre as cepas testadas. Conclusão: O Coité apresentou efeito antibacteriano equivalente ou superior à clorexidina 0,12% nas 3 cepas testadas, mostrando-se como uma alternativa viável de antimicrobiano natural, de baixo custo e de fácil acesso pela população.
INTRODUÇÃO:A erosão dentária consiste na destruição do esmalte e/ou dentina por meio da dissolução química desses tecidos, através de ácidos de origem não bacteriana. Dentre as causas extrínsecas dessa patologia, o consumo de bebidas com teor ácido está entre as mais agravantes, gerando diversas consequências para a saúde bucal. OBJETIVO: Investigar as principais alternativas disponíveis na literatura para a redução do potencial erosivo de bebidas às estruturas dentárias. METODOLOGIA: Trata-se de um estudo de revisão de literatura com buscas de alta sensibilidade nas bases de dados Medline (PubMed), EMBASE (Elsevier), Cochrane Library, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) e Web of Science. Os descritores foram selecionados do Medical Subject Headings (Mesh), do Embase Subject Headings (Emtree) e do Descritores em Ciências da Saúde (DeCS), sendo estes: "Dente", "Erosão Dentária", "Desgaste dos Dentes", "Desmineralização do Dente", "Remineralização Dentária", "Bebidas Adoçadas com Açúcar", "Bebidas Gaseificadas", "Bebidas Energéticas", "Bebidas Adoçadas Artificialmente" e "Sucos de Frutas e Vegetais". Adaptações dessa estratégia de busca, referentes ao idioma e combinações dos descritores, foram realizadas para as bases de dados. As buscas incluíram artigos nas línguas portuguesa, inglesa ou espanhola publicados até 2021. RESULTADOS: Um total de 43 estudos foram incluídos nesta revisão, publicados entre os anos de 1973 a 2021 na língua inglesa. Os sucos de frutas (n=21), os refrigerantes (n=20) e os energéticos (n=5) foram as bebidas modificadas mais exploradas. Já as substâncias mais testadas adicionadas às bebidas para a redução do potencial erosivo foram o cálcio (n=10), o lactato de cálcio pentahidratado (n=3), o citrato malato de cálcio (n=3), a goma xantana (n=3), o sulfato ferroso (n=3) e a hidroxiapatita nanométrica (n=3). Tais substâncias também foram testadas modificadas ou associadas a outros compostos. CONCLUSÃO: As formulações de cálcio se destacaram nos estudos, sendo as mais exploradas, oferecendo resultados promissores na redução do potencial erosivo principalmente de sucos de frutas e refrigerantes. Assim, a modificação de bebidas ácidas tem um grande impacto na saúde bucal daqueles que consumem com frequência, pois minimizará a ocorrência da erosão dentária e, consequentemente, reduzirá a sensibilidade dental, o comprometimento estético e danos pulpares.
