Comparado com o debate gerado nos Estados Unidos e na Europa, a teoria das economias religiosas proposta e defendida principalmente por Rodney Stark, Roger Finke e Larry Iannaccone tem obtido pouca atenção nos meios acadêmicos latino-americanos. Nesses, é recebida com ceticismo porque alguns de seus pressupostos despertam pouca adesão, principalmente a importância que atribui ao mercado e à escolha racional na dinâmica das religiões. De fato, poucos são os trabalhos locais que explicitam com precisão seus argumentos e os compreendem a partir de seus supostos e definições.Em artigos anteriores examinei criticamente essa perspectiva (cf. Frigerio, 2000); usei alguns de seus conceitos para analisar o futuro das religiões mágicas na América Latina (cf. Frigerio, 1999) e, mais recentemente, para questionar a visão tradicional do monopólio católico na Argentina (cf. Frigerio, 2007a). Neste trabalho desejo retomar algumas dessas questões, analisando as principais proposições dos autores norte-americanos a respeito da escolha racional, do funcionamento do mercado religioso e de suas conseqüências para o pluralismo religioso 1 .A eleição desses três temas não é casual. O exame de suas idéias sobre a escolha racional resulta necessário porque sua definição se modificou, inclinando-se mais para a perspectiva do ator na última formulação extensiva da teoria (cf. Stark e Finke, 2000). Uma reflexão sobre suas idéias a respeito do mercado é importante localmente por dois motivos. Em primeiro lugar, 1. O Brasil foi um dos casos pioneiros na recepção internacional de Pierre Bourdieu, sociólogo que, desde a década de 1990, tornou-se um dos mais citados em todo o país. Essa questão é discutida articulando-se duas séries históricas: a produção e consagração da obra de Bourdieu a partir da França e a dinâmica da institucionalização das ciências sociais no Brasil. Desde o final dos anos de 1960, a circulação de pesquisadores brasileiros na França aumentou consideravelmente, e alguns deles se constituíram em importantes mediadores da recepção de Bourdieu no Brasil; suas trajetórias e os papéis desempenhados são avaliados neste artigo. Inicialmente recebido como um dos autores contemporâneos mais propensos à renovação teórica e metodológica das ciências sociais nas décadas de 1970/80, o autor seria instituído, a partir da década de 1990, como referência obrigatória, a despeito das resistências que suscitou.
Dada a transmissão da herança colonial que faz do catolicismo a religião dominante no país, multiplicam-se os exemplos de artistas, literatos, filóso-fos e outros produtores do mundo intelectual providos dessa formação, presentes em todas as etapas do processo de constituição dos universos de produção simbólica. Muitos situam suas obras nessa zona de influência e assumem a filiação religiosa como aspecto importante de sua identidade intelectual e artística; outros vão além -convertendo o catolicismo no princí-pio gerador de seus trabalhos, em nome do qual intervêm nas disputas esté-ticas e políticas. Ao contrário dos outros, esse último grupo não tem localização difusa no tempo e no espaço, e se constitui propriamente como grupo, ou seja, um conjunto de indivíduos dotados de um carisma coletivo que permite reconhecimento recíproco, e que atua programaticamente a partir de um conjunto de crenças e valores que se firmam como consenso. É nessa acepção mais restritiva que este trabalho faz referência aos intelectuais católicos, que emergem na cena cultural brasileira no final dos anos de 1920 e têm impacto relevante até ao menos o fim dos anos de 1940.Para qualificar melhor o grupo, é possível dividi-lo em duas frações, ambas radicadas no Rio de Janeiro: aquela galvanizada por Jackson de Figueiredo e
