Há uma crise geral nas ciências do homem: estão tôdas elas esmagadas pelos seus próprios progressos, isto em razão do acúmulo de novos conhecimentos e pela necessidade de um trabalho coletivo, cuja organização inteligente está ainda por estabelecer; direta ou indiretamente, tôdas, das mais ágeis dentre elas, são atingidas, quer queiram ou não, pelos progressos, mas permanecem, no entanto, ligadas a um humani s mo retró-grado, insidioso, que não lhes pode mais servir de quadro. Tô-das, com mais ou menos lucidez, preocupam-se com ,.eu lugar no conjunto monstruoso das pesquisas antigas e novas, cuja convergência necessária se adivinha atualmente.Sairão as ciências humanas destas dificuldades através de um esfôrço suplementar de definição, ou por um acréscimo de mau humor? Talvez tenham essa ilusão, porque (r•;( --,b o risco de voltar a velhas repetições ou a falsos problemas) ci-las preocupadas, hoje mais do que nunca, em definir seus objetivos, seus métodos, suas superioridades. Ei-las, à porfia, empenhadas nas contendas sôbre as fronteiras que as separam, ou que não as separam, ou que as separam mal das ciências vizinhas. Pois cada uma delas sonha, de fato, em permanecer o que é, ou voltar a ser o que era...
