Background: Ovary is a complex structure and its neoplasms show a wide spectrum of histological types and clinical behaviour. The present study was done with the aim of studying the histopathological pattern of the ovarian tumours in women of various age groups.Methods: This was prospective study conducted over a period of 2 years from Jan 2015 to Dec 2016 and included 193 cases of ovarian neoplasms.Results: Of 193 cases 155 (80.3%) were benign, 8 (4.1%) were borderline and 30 (15.5%) were malignant tumours. Surface epithelial tumours constituted majority of the tumours (64.7%). Mature cystic teratoma (30.6%%) was the most common benign tumour followed by serous cyst adenoma (26.9%). Serous cyst adenocarcinoma (7.8%) was the most common malignant tumour of the ovary. While tumours were seen over a wide range of 6-75 years, >80% of benign tumours were seen in patients of <40 years and 60% of malignant tumours were seen in patients of >40 years of age.Conclusions: The findings of present study are comparable to the published data from the subcontinent.

Objectives: To identify independent risk factors for abdominal wound dehiscence and develop a risk model to recognize high risk patients. Methods: The samples studied were patients who underwent midline laparotomy in the department of surgery, SMHS Hospital Srinagar from March 2009 to April 2015. For each case of abdominal wound dehiscence, three controls were selected from a group of patients who had undergone open abdominal surgery as close as possible in time. Preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative variables and in-hospital mortality were studied for all patients. Cases were compared with controls using the chi-square test or the Mann-Whitney U-test for categorical or continuous data, respectively. Subsequently, multivariate stepwise logistic regression with backwards elimination test used to identify main independent risk factors of abdominal wound dehiscence. The resulting regression coefficients for the major risk factors were used as weights for these variables to calculate a risk score for abdominal wound dehiscence. Results: 140 cases of abdominal wound dehiscence were reported and compared with 420 selected controls. All variables that were significant in univariate analyses were entered in a multivariate stepwise logistic regression to determine which variables were significant independent risk factors. Major independent risk factors were male gender, chronic pulmonary disease, corticosteroid use, smoking, obesity, anemia, jaundice, ascites, and sepsis, type of surgery, postoperative coughing, and wound infection. Based on these findings, a risk model was developed. Conclusions: The model can give an estimate of the risk of abdominal wound dehiscence for individual patients. High-risk patients may be planned preventive wound closing with reinforcements as mesh.

Background: Testicular and paratesticular neoplasia are rare type of tumors affecting adolescents and young adults in India, as observed by paucity of published data. This study was undertaken to analyze the patterns of testicular tumors at a tertiary level hospital in Kashmir valley, Jammu and Kashmir, India highlighting the patient’s demography, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation and pathological finding.Methods: This 5-year (retrospective and prospective) study was performed in the Department of Pathology, Government Medical College Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India from January 2012 to December 2016. For the retrospective study, all cases of testicular tumors, their histopathological reports and required clinical details were searched from records maintained in the Department of Pathology, GMC Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. For the prospective study, the orchiedectomy specimens received in our department were subjected to routine histopathological processing followed by a detailed gross and microscopic examination. Tumour typing and subtyping was done according to WHO classification (2004).Results: A total of 37 cases of testicular and paratesticular neoplasia were included in present study with a mean age of 35.1 years. Out of these 37 cases, 31 (83.78%) were malignant and 6 cases (16.22%) were benign. Right testis was affected in 70.3% of cases. The most common clinical presentation was scrotal swelling. Germ cell tumor was the most common type accounting for 89.2% of tumors followed by lymphomas (8.1%).Conclusions:It is concluded that despite new techniques in imaging and tumor marker assay, the diagnosis of testicular tumors is dependent upon histopathological examination. The present study fairly provides an insight into the clinical presentations, prevalence and patterns of testicular tumors.

Introduction: Breast cancer is the commonest malignancy in women worldwide. There are considerable variations in risk factors and presentation of the disease region wise. The present study aimed to describe clinical and pathological profile of breast cancer patients attending tertiary care hospital. Method: All consenting patients attending to surgical out-patient department (OPD) with complaints pertaining to breast disease were enrolled from 16 th June 2015 to 15 th June 2016. The patients were followed and demographic, clinical and pathologic information was recorded and analysed. Results: Total Of 180 patients with breast disease were enrolled. 34/100 were diagnosed of malignancy and formed the cases of the present study. Age of the patients ranged from 22 to 60 years with mean age of 42.06 ± 10.7 years. All the patients presented as breast lump variably associated with pain or discharge. Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma Not Otherwise Specified (IDC NOS) was common histologic diagnosis (76.47%). Conclusion: Breast carcinoma presents with painless lump and patients are usually diagnosed in our setup at locally advanced stage. Implementation of the simple and effective screening programs for early detection is urgent need in our population.

COVID-19 brings uncertainties and new precarities for communities and researchers, altering and amplifying relational vulnerabilities (vulnerabilities which emerge from relationships of unequal power and place those less powerful at risk of abuse and violence). Research approaches have changed too, with increasing use of remote data collection methods. These multiple changes necessitate new or adapted safeguarding responses. This practice piece shares practical learnings and resources on safeguarding from the Accountability for Informal Urban Equity hub, which uses participatory action research, aiming to catalyse change in approaches to enhancing accountability and improving the health and well-being of marginalised people living and working in informal urban spaces in Bangladesh, India, Kenya and Sierra Leone. We outline three new challenges that emerged in the context of the pandemic (1): exacerbated relational vulnerabilities and dilemmas for researchers in responding to increased reports of different forms of violence coupled with support services that were limited prior to the pandemic becoming barely functional or non-existent in some research sites, (2) the increased use of virtual and remote research methods, with implications for safeguarding and (3) new stress, anxiety and vulnerabilities experienced by researchers. We then outline our learning and recommended action points for addressing emerging challenges, linking practice to the mnemonic ‘the four Rs: recognise, respond, report, refer’. COVID-19 has intensified safeguarding risks. We stress the importance of communities, researchers and co-researchers engaging in dialogue and ongoing discussions of power and positionality, which are important to foster co-learning and co-production of safeguarding processes.
