Cet article présente une étude conduite en Unité de prise en charge somatique des troubles du sommeil chez l’adolescent. Il montre comment la mise en place d’un dispositif de consultation psychologique a permis de saisir certains enjeux psychiques de cette symptomatologie assez méconnue mais présente chez les 13-18 ans. Du point de vue psychopathologique, l’hypersomnie juvénile constitue un agir somatique défensif nécessaire au fonctionnement de la psyché dans l’élaboration du passage adolescent. Véritable scène-refuge face à des éléments conflictuels et douloureux, le sommeil pathologique relève d’un (sinon de plusieurs) processus d’inhibition. Néanmoins, l’hypersomnie possède une potentialité active, liée au rêve lucide qui l’accompagne parfois. L’étude du cas de Laura, adolescente hypersomniaque de 17 ans, permet d’illustrer la fonction symboligène de cet agir somatique.
