Supervised methods have been the dominant approach for Chinese word segmentation. The performance can drop significantly when the test domain is different from the training domain. In this paper, we study the problem of obtaining partial annotation from freely available data to help Chinese word segmentation on different domains. Different sources of free annotations are transformed into a unified form of partial annotation and a variant CRF model is used to leverage both fully and partially annotated data consistently. Experimental results show that the Chinese word segmentation model benefits from free partially annotated data. On the SIGHAN Bakeoff 2010 data, we achieve results that are competitive to the best reported in the literature.
The cerebral glymphatic system, particularly the Virchow-Robin Spaces (VRS), plays an important role in waste clearance from the brain. Idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) is a common epilepsy type associated with blood-brain-barrier dysfunction, abnormal exchange of cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid. These disorders may be reflected in the glymphatic system. Therefore, this study investigated the relationships between visible VRS on MRI and seizures, to detect changes in glymphatic function. Methods: We retrospectively included 32 children with newly diagnosed IGE and 30 controls aged 3-13 years. Visible VRS were identified using a custom-designed automated method. VRS counts and volume were quantified and compared between children with IGE and controls. Meanwhile, Correlations of VRS counts and volume with seizure duration and course after seizure onset were respectively explored via Spearman's coefficient (r). Results: In this study, visible VRS counts were higher in IGE than control group (VRS _epilepsy , 234.34 ± 113.88 vs. VRS _control , 111.83 ± 52.46; P < 0.001), as similar results were found in VRS volume (VRS _epilepsy , 1377.47 ± 778.79 mm 3 vs. VRS _control , 795.153 ± 452.49 mm 3 ; P = 0.001). Visible VRS counts and volume positively correlated with seizure duration (r _counts = 0.638, r _volume = 0.639; P < 0.001) and gradually decreased with time after seizure onset (r _counts = −0.559, r_ volume = −0.558; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Epileptic seizures can induce changes in VRS counts and volume, which were associated with seizure duration and post-onset course. Quantitative metrics of VRS visible on MRI might be potential biomarkers for monitoring glymphatic function.
Background: Simple febrile seizures (SFS) and epilepsy are common seizures in childhood. However, the mechanism underlying SFS is uncertain, and the presence of obvious variances in white matter (WM) integrity and glymphatic function between SFS and epilepsy remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the differences in WM integrity and glymphatic function between SFS and epilepsy.Material and Methods: We retrospectively included 26 children with SFS, 33 children with epilepsy, and 28 controls aged 6–60 months who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) were used to compare the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics of WM among the above-mentioned groups. T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) was used to segment the visible Virchow-Robin space (VRS) through a custom-designed automated method. VRS counts and volume were quantified and compared among the SFS, epilepsy, and control groups. Correlations of the VRS metrics and seizure duration and VRS metrics and the time interval between seizure onset and MRI scan were also investigated. Results: In comparison with controls, children with SFS showed no significant changes in fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD), or radial diffusivity (RD) in the WM (P > 0.05). Decreased FA, unchanged AD, and increased RD were observed in the epilepsy group in comparison with the SFS and control groups (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, VRS counts were higher in the SFS and epilepsy groups than in the control group (VRS_SFS, 442.42 ± 74.58, VRS_epilepsy, 629.94 ± 106.55, VRS_control, 354.14 ± 106.58; P < 0.001), and similar results were found for VRS volume (VRS_SFS, 6,228.18 ± 570.74 mm3, VRS_epilepsy, 9,684.84 ± 7,292.66mm3, VRS_control, 4,007.22 ± 118.86 mm3; P < 0.001). However, VRS metrics were lower in the SFS group than in the epilepsy group (P < 0.001). In both SFS and epilepsy, VRS metrics positively correlated with seizure duration and negatively correlated with the course after seizure onset. Conclusion: SFS may not be associated with WM microstructural disruption; however, epilepsy is related to WM alterations. Seizures are associated with glymphatic dysfunction in either SFS or epilepsy.
Bacteria and excessive inflammation are two main factors causing non-healing wounds. However, current studies have mainly focused on the inhibition of bacteria survival for wound healing while ignoring the excessive inflammation induced by dead bacteria-released lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or peptidoglycan (PGN). Herein, a boron-trapping strategy has been proposed to prevent both infection and excessive inflammation by synthesizing a class of reactive metal boride nanoparticles (MB NPs). Our results show that the MB NPs are gradually hydrolyzed to generate boron dihydroxy groups and metal cations while generating a local alkaline microenvironment. This microenvironment greatly enhances boron dihydroxy groups to trap LPS or PGN through an esterification reaction, which not only enhances metal cation-induced bacterial death but also inhibits dead bacteria-induced excessive inflammation both in vitro and in vivo, finally accelerating wound healing. Taken together, this boron-trapping strategy provides an approach to the treatment of bacterial infection and the accompanying inflammation.
The mesenteric lymph node (MLN) is the main draining lymph node in mouse enterocoelia, which contains many types of immune cells. Among these cells, natural killer (NK) and natural killer T (NKT) cells belong to innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), which have potent activities for controlling a variety of pathogenic infections. In this study, C57BL/6 mice were infected with Schistosoma japonicum for 5-7 weeks. Lymphocytes were isolated from the MLN to detect changes in the phenotype and function of NK and NKT cells using a fluorescence activating cell sorter (FACS). These results demonstrated that a S. japonicum infection could significantly increase the percentage of NK cells in the mouse MLN, (P < 0.05). We found an increase in the cell number of both NK and NKT cells. In addition, we found that NK and NKT cells from infected mice expressed higher levels of CD69 compared to normal mice (P < 0.05). These results demonstrated that a S. japonicum infection could induce MLN NK and NKT cell activation. Moreover, we found that the expression of CD4 was increased in infected MLN NK cells (P < 0.05). Furthermore, intracellular cytokine staining revealed that expression of IL-4 and IL-17 were significantly enhanced in both the NK and NKT cells of infected mice after phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and ionomycin stimulation (P < 0.05). Taken together, these results indicated that infection-induced MLN NK and NKT cells might play roles in modulating the classical T cell response. Finally, our results indicated that the expression of CD94 was decreased in NK cells, suggesting that the downregulation of CD94 expression might served as a mechanism in NK cell activation.
White matter maturation has been characterized by diffusion tensor (DT) metrics. However, maturational processes and degrees are not fully investigated due to limitations of univariate approaches and limited specificity/sensitivity. Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) provides kurtosis tensor (KT) and white matter tract integrity (WMTI) metrics, besides DT metrics. Therefore, we tried to investigate performances of DKI with the multiparametric analysis in characterizing white matter maturation. Developmental changes in metrics were investigated by using tract‐based spatial statistics and the region of interest analysis on 50 neonates with postmenstrual age (PMA) from 37.43 to 43.57 weeks. Changes in metrics were combined into various patterns to reveal different maturational processes. Mahalanobis distance based on DT metrics (DM,DT) and that combing DT and KT metrics (DM,DT‐KT) were computed, separately. Performances of DM,DT‐KT and DM,DT were compared in revealing correlations with PMA and the neurobehavioral score. Compared with DT metrics, WMTI metrics demonstrated additional changing patterns. Furthermore, variations of DM,DT‐KT across regions were in agreement with the maturational sequence. Additionally, DM,DT‐KT demonstrated stronger negative correlations with PMA and the neurobehavioral score in more regions than DM,DT. Results suggest that DKI with the multiparametric analysis benefits the understanding of white matter maturational processes and degrees on neonates.
