The importance of understanding spatial variability of soils is connected to crop management planning. This understanding makes it possible to treat soil not as a uniform, but a variable entity, and it enables site-specific management to increase production efficiency, which is the target of precision agriculture. Questions remain as the optimum soil sampling interval needed to make site-specific fertilizer recommendations in Brazil. The objectives of this study were: i) to evaluate the spatial variability of the main attributes that influence fertilization recommendations, using georeferenced soil samples arranged in grid patterns of different resolutions; ii) to compare the spatial maps generated with those obtained with the standard sampling of 1 sample ha -1 , in order to verify the appropriateness of the spatial resolution. The attributes evaluated were phosphorus (P), potassium (K), organic matter (OM), base saturation (V%) and clay. Soil samples were collected in a 100 × 100 m georeferenced grid. Thinning was performed in order to create a grid with one sample every 2.07, 2.88, 3.75 and 7.20 ha. Geostatistical techniques, such as semivariogram and interpolation using kriging, were used to analyze the attributes at the different grid resolutions. This analysis was performed with the Vesper software package. The maps created by this method were compared using the kappa statistics. Additionally, correlation graphs were drawn by plotting the observed values against the estimated values using cross-validation. P, K and V%, a finer sampling resolution than the one using 1 sample ha -1 is required, while for OM and clay coarser resolutions of one sample every two and three hectares, respectively, may be acceptable.
Palavras-chave: agricultura de precisão, sensoriamento remoto, NDVI Capability of an optical sensor in verifying the sugarcane response to nitrogen rates ABSTRACT Techniques of precision agriculture are alternatives to optimize the use of inputs, among them nitrogen. The present work had as its objective to verify the possibility of use of a commercial optical sensor in sugarcane, verifying its capability in identification of the crop response to different nitrogen (N) rates. An experiment was installed in randomized blocks in an experimental area with third sugarcane ratoon, harvested mechanically, with different N rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha -1 ) and four repetitions. At 30, 60 and 90 days after the harvest (DAH) the measuring of NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) was accomplished starting from the optical sensor. No response was verified of NDVI on measurements at the 30 and 60 DAH, however at 90 DAH the sensor was capable to differentiate the doses of applied N, positively correlated with the sugarcane final production. This work gives subsidies to studies of same nature that seek the management of the nitrogen fertilization in sugarcane using optical sensor.
Agricultural residual biomass is an important source of energy, and its production and quality vary according to the crop management. This study aimed to assess the effects of plant distribution and nitrogen fertilization on the energy production potential of the biomass of maize cultivated under no tillage. The field experiment was installed in southeast Brazil using five nitrogen rates (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg ha -1 ) and two inter-row spacings (0.4 and 0.8 m). Grain yield, residual biomass productivity, and bioenergy potential in different parts of the plant (grain, stalk+leaf, husk, and cob) were assessed. No change in grain yield was observed using narrow row spacing. Stalk+leaf and husk productivity was higher using 0.8 m than using 0.4 m of inter-row spacing. Nitrogen application resulted in increased grain yield and biomass productivity. Nitrogen influences the bioenergy potential by increasing the biomass and calorific value. Application of the maximum nitrogen fertilization rate is recommended for grain yield considering the use of only the husk and cob can generate 2712 kWh ha -1 of bioenergy.Index terms: Renewable energy; Zea Mays (L.); calorific value; electricity; macronutrients. Active optical sensors are a new approach for site specific nitrogen management on real time and they have been successfully used on grain crops. This work consisted in evaluating the behavior of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using a commercial active optical sensor on 28 sugarcane varieties, as well as analyzing the temporal behavior of this index for each variety throughout the initial 150 days of their productive cycle. The NDVI data was collected with 90, 120 and 150 days after planting (DAP). A descriptive statistical analysis of the data was performed and a Tukey test was applied to contrast the NDVI means. Results indicated that the varieties interfere in the NDVI readings and, in general, the readings with 90 DAP were different from those with 120 and 150 DAP, tending to stabilize along time for each variety. Keywords: Precision Agriculture, NDVI, Remote Sensing.
The intense and successive use of mechanization in modern cropping systems has increased soil compaction under no-till areas. In this study, we aimed to assess the performance of a fixed shank coupled with a seeder for the mitigation of soil compaction induced by machinery traffic as an efficient alternative to replacing the chiseling and subsoiling operations in no-till areas. We evaluated a long-term experiment conducted in clay loam (Rhodic Haplustox) soil in southern Brazil. The experiment was conducted under a randomized block design, whose treatments consisted of three wheel-traffic intensities: 0 wheel-traffic (0 WT), 14 wheel-traffic (14 WT), and 28 wheel-traffic (28 WT), combined with four soil tillage mechanical interventions under a no-till field: no-till (NT), no-till with a fixed shank (NT + FS), soil chiseling (SC), and soil subsoiling (SS). The soil physical attributes evaluated were the soil penetration resistance (SPR), macroporosity (MaP), microporosity (MiP), total porosity (TP), bulk density (BD), field-saturated hydraulic conductivity (Kfs), S index, and plant-available water capacity (PAWC). In addition, three critical soil physical functions were evaluated by using a soil physical quality index (SPQI). The results showed that SPR was sensitive to soil compaction and captured differences among the mechanical intervention methods. Machinery traffic caused soil compaction, increasing SPR and reducing PAWC. Soil chiseling and subsoiling promoted lower BD, a higher TP, MaP, Kfs, and higher S index at the 0.05–0.15 m soil layer. Based on the SPQI, no changes were detected in the soil physical functions between NT and NT + FS. On the other hand, SC and SS enhanced soil physical functioning by 10%. We concluded that a 15-cm deep fixed shank could not mitigate the soil compaction induced by machinery traffic at the seeder operation. Therefore, this method is less effective in improving the soil’s physical environment than chiseling and subsoiling operations. Finally, we encourage monitoring the persistence of these benefits on the soil over the subsequent crop seasons and in years with an intense water deficit along with the crop cycle.
