On ne peut pas dire que l'action collective, les mouvements sociaux, les différentes formes de militantisme (syndical, politique, associatif) soient des objets réellement explorés par la géographie (même sociale). De façon symptomatique, ces différents termes n'apparaissent pas dans les dictionnaires les plus récents de la discipline, seul le terme conflit trouvant éventuellement une petite place. Symétriquement, si depuis une dizaine d'années les travaux sur l'action collective connaissent un développement sans précédent en France, l'espace est loin d'être exploré de façon approfondie et systématique par ses spécialistes -qu'ils soient sociologues, politistes, historiens ou économistes.
2Il semble donc important d'essayer de combler cette lacune en reprenant l'hypothèse maintenant classique que l'espace (compris comme cadre physique) est nécessairement l'enjeu de rapports sociaux, rapports de pouvoir éclatant parfois en véritables conflits ou guerres (Frémont et al., 1984 ;Lacoste, 1976) ; mais surtout, plus largement, que chaque terme de tout mouvement social a nécessairement une dimension spatiale non négligeable (au sens strict)
