Objective: to describe the use of the Clinical Caritas Processes in workshops for caregivers of institutionalized elderly people, aimed at analyzing these professionals' perception on humane care towards the institutionalized elderly. Method: a convergent care research was conducted with 18 caregivers of a long-term care institution for elderly people in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. Data were collected from June to November 2013, consisting of two months of interaction with the care service and ten meetings conducted in workshops for caregivers. Data were based on the theoretical framework of the Clinical Caritas Processes. Data analysis was based on content analysis and produced ten thematic categories based on the Caritas factors of caring. Conclusion: it was found that the use of the ten Caritas factors of caring were useful for humanistic formations when introducing the group to the conceptions of caring that value the self of the people providing the care and of the ones-being cared for. This article aimed to analyze the perception of the nursing team about the care of institutionalized elderly. It consists of a qualitative and exploratory study developed in the six long-term care nursing homes for elderly in the city of João Pessoa/PB, Brazil, from January to June 2013. The sample was comprised 50% of the nurses from all the institutions, totaling 13 participants, whose data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires. Content analysis was used in the study, which enabled the construction of two thematic categories: I) Perceptions of the delivery of care by the nursing staff of the institutions; II) Perceptions of the care activity to be performed by the nursing staff in the institutions. We conclude that the participants are aware of the need for an individualized and systematized care by the nursing staff, aimed to the prevention of diseases, health promotion and active aging.

Estudo analítico e descritivo cujo objetivo foi descrever e analisar a percepção dos acadêmicos de enfermagemsobre a formação em Gerontologia. A amostra foi composta por 57 acadêmicos de enfermagem da Universidade Estadualda Paraíba (UEPB). Diante da análise de conteúdo foram selecionadas duas categorias temáticas: os elementos envolvidosno processo de cuidar de idosos (incluindo a exigência da subjetividade e conhecimento especializado, além doreconhecimento social ao idoso); e outra esteve relacionada com práticas e saberes do cuidar de idosos necessários aoensino de enfermagem. Sugere-se que mais estudos se direcionem na reflexão dos currículos e em discussões sobre asaúde do idoso visando à formação de um enfermeiro apto para enfrentar os desafios do envelhecimento da população.

Objective:To analyze the risk of violence associated to functional capacity and sociodemographic characteristics of hospitalized elderly. Method: Quantitative, crosssectional, multicenter study conducted with elderly receiving care at university hospitals of the municipalities of João Pessoa and Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The scales Katz and Hwalek-Sengstock Elder Abuse Screening Test were applied. The data was analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics using Chi-squared Pearson test, Spearman correlation test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: The participating elderly amounted to 323. The risk of violence was predominant among female elders aged 60 to 70 who are unable to read or write, live with someone, perform no labor activity, and whose income is higher than a minimum wage. Elders who were dependent for basic and instrumental activities presented a 2.11 score (Confidence Interval = 1.22-3.64; p = 0.000) and 1.70 (1.01-2.85; p = 0.044) and a higher risk of violence. Conclusion: Elders who depended on other people to perform both complex and basic activities are the most exposed to situations of violence.

Objetivou-se investigar a condição de saúde e estimar a incapacidade funcional para atividades da vida diária em idosos adscritos às Unidades Básicas de Saúde da zona urbana de Campina Grande-PB. Estudo epidemiológico, realizado com 36 idosos. Utilizou-se questionário sociodemográfico e Índice de Barthel. A idade dos idosos variou de 65 a 90 anos, 72% eram aposentados e 100% da população tinham, até, o Ensino Fundamental e residiam com familiares. Os problemas de saúde comuns foram: hipertensão arterial (49%), dor (18%), incontinência urinária (12%) e diabetes mellitus (9%). Identificou-se: incapacidade funcional leve (34%) e grave (8%). Os idosos demandavam: consulta médica (25%), exames laboratoriais (25%), medicação (19%), dentes postiços (72%), dentadura (22%) e bengala (6%). Há necessidade de profissionais de saúde com capacitação em gerontologia e geriatria, objetivando assegurar a integralidade da assistência, contribuindo com a garantia da qualidade da atenção à saúde do idoso.

Objective: to clinically validate the nursing diagnosis of NANDA-I Frail Elderly Syndrome in hospitalized elderly. Method: a methodological study, guided by the STROBE instrument, composed of 40 elderly people admitted to a teaching hospital in Paraíba, Brazil. The last phase of Hoskins’ Nursing Diagnostic Validation Model: clinical validation was adopted. Data collection took place from August to December 2018. The data were analyzed using univariate descriptive statistics. It was approved by the hospital’s ethics and research committee. Results: nine defining characteristics were validated; seven risk factors; six populations at risk and two associated conditions. Conclusion: the validation of the nursing diagnosis of the Frail Elderly Syndrome in our socio-cultural context was considered appropriate, being an important step for critical thinking that underlies the decision-making of nurses in the care of the frail elderly, as well as professional practice.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to validate nursing interventions for the diagnosis Risk for Impaired Skin Integrity in adult and aged hospitalized patients. Methods: descriptive, quantitative study, using the content validity of interventions done by 14 specialist nurses. Results: the specialist nurses had worked in the area for more than five years. Four (28.5%) used NANDA-I and CIPE®, three (21.4%) used NANDA-I, NIC and CIPE®, three (21.4%) used NANDA-I, NIC, NOC and CIPE® and four (28.5%) were currently working only with CIPE®. The validation analyzed 32 NIC interventions, of which 11 were priority and 21 were suggested. Of the priority interventions, five belonged to the Physiological/Complex domain, five to the Physiological/Basic domain and one to the Safety Domain. Final Considerations: nursing interventions are essential for planning and support good practices in teaching, research and care.

Introduction: The aging process of the population causes several transformations in social, cultural and health context. The demand for gerontological care increases and, due to that, homes for the aged emerge as an alternative housing for elders who do not have enough support at this new life stage or for those whoopt to live there.Objective: This study aimed at describing the profile of caregivers of elderly people who live in homes for the aged in the metropolitan regionof João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil.Method: This is a descriptive, exploratory and quantitative research that was carried out between November/2012 and January/2014 in 11 institutions, composed by a sample of 26 caregivers. Two semistructured questionnaires were used for data collection; Word Excel 2007 was used for selection and categorization of the data and SPSS was used fordescriptive analysis. Results:The age range of the caregivers was between 25 and 82 years old. 88.5% are female; 38.5% are married; 19.23% of them reported receiving specific education to become caregivers and most of them (69.23%) did not acquire any sort of qualification. Conclusion:It is concluded that the hiring and qualification of caregivers is necessary for the direct work with the institutionalized elderly, which will greatly influence the assistance to be provided in these institutions, resulting in improving the health of all older people living there.
