Several studies have investigated potential interactions between emotion and memory by focusing on analyses of accuracy and response bias. These studies typically show higher accuracy and laxer response bias to emotional relative to neutral words. Fewer studies, however, have examined interactions between emotion and memory by focusing on response time data. Here, we report a recognition memory experiment in which emotional words, neutral words, and semantically related neutral words were used as probes. Participants were slower to reject novel emotional words than to reject novel neutral words, whereas they exhibited equivalent response times to emotional and neutral studied words. Quantile analysis showed that such slower rejection of emotional novel words was restricted to slower responses, suggesting potential interactions between emotion and higher order processes during recognition. These findings are interpreted in light of affective theories of exposure and theories of emotional processing.
ABSTRACT -The study of false memories has been favored by the DRM paradigm (Deese-Roediger-McDermott), where lists of associated words induce subjects to falsely remember items not previously presented. To demonstrate the efficacy of an alternative category of stimuli, we investigated the influence of emotion on false memories by means of sets of thematic, emotionally associated photos proceeding from the IAPS (International Affective Picture System). False memory levels were similar to those reported in studies with verbal stimuli or simple visual stimuli. Negative sets elicited higher levels of both true and false memories, in a comparison with positive sets. It is suggested that results typically observed in the DRM can be obtained by using sets of photos, which are more complex and ecological stimuli than words.
A robust set of evidence demonstrates that, after reactivation, the memories incur a lability state, during which they are susceptible to manipulations that interfere in its content or on the probability of retrieval in the future. This effect, called "reconsolidation", is similar to the period of instability following the learning of new information, classically referred to as a "consolidation". Although the effect of reconsolidation is known for more than 40 years, the topic only received notoriety recently, and since then, an increasing number of scientific publications has elucidated some of the fundamental processes. However, once the theme has been little reported in the Brazilian literature, this article presents a critical review of the literature, which discuss the historical background of the reconsolidation concept, its methods of investigation, scope and prospects for research.
