Dans cet article, nous étudierons le débat qui, à la fin des années 1970, a opposé Althusser à Poulantzas autour de la question de savoir si le dépérissement de l’État doit constituer le foyer d’une stratégie communiste et, le cas échéant, comment cette stratégie devrait dès à présent affecter la politique communiste. Pour Poulantzas, l’État est le champ stratégique de la pratique politique. La politique communiste doit l’investir de l’intérieur afin de modifier les rapports de force entre les classes. Pour Althusser, l’État participe à la constitution de la forme dominante de la lutte des classes, qui soutient le pouvoir de la classe dominante. La politique communiste doit développer une autre forme de la lutte des classes qui, par delà la division entre champs de lutte, transforme l’initiative des masses en un pouvoir autonome, de manière à ce qu’elles se réapproprient et transforment les fonctions de l’État.
