Subjective well-being concerns an evaluation of one's life, considering cognitive and affective aspects. Contextual factors, such as family, may influence this process. One of the main development contexts of children is family and aspects of these relationships, such as different settings, might contribute to children's subjective well-being. The aim of this study was to compare the well-being of children from different family settings (intact, single-parent, stepfamilies, multigenerational). Participants were 2,135 boys and girls, from 9 to 13 years old (M = 10.97, SD = 0.99), students of public and private schools from a Brazilian southern State. Children answered a questionnaire with sociodemographic variables and three well-being scales (PWI-SC, BMSLSS, GDSI). Children were divided in four groups according to whom they live with (intact, single-parent, stepfamilies, multigenerational families). To evaluate differences between groups a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) were performed, considering well-being scales as dependent variables and family setting as independent variable. Results indicated significant differences in the well-being of children in relation to their family setting and age. Children from intact families showed significant positive differences on the well-being from children of other settings (the lowest means were from the children of stepfamilies). It is argued that transitions and instability that children are being subjected to may affect their well-being.Keywords Subjective well-being . Children . Families . O objetivo do estudo foi investigar a contribuição da satisfação com a família e com a escola para a predição da satisfação com a vida. Participaram 2105 crianças, com idades entre 10 e 12 anos matriculadas em escolas públicas e particulares do Rio Grande do Sul. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: âmbito satisfação com a escola do General Domain Satisfaction Index, cinco itens relativos à satisfação com aspectos dos relacionamentos familiares e a escala de item único Overal Life Satisfaction. Foram realizadas análises de variância por idade e sexo e análise de regressão múltipla. Os resultados indicam que existem diferenças estatisticamente significativas por idade e sexo. A análise de regressão múltipla verificou que os itens que mais predisseram a satisfação com a vida foram relativos a serem ouvidas pelos seus pais (β=0,158; p<0,01), estarem satisfeitas com a experiência na escola (β=0,156; p<0,01) e com os colegas (β=0,124; p<0,01). Ressalta-se que a satisfação com a família e com a escola explicam 21,8% da variância da satisfação com a vida. Destaca-se a importância do estímulo ao diálogo entre família e escola para promover o bem-estar da criança.

We performed a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) with subjective well-being scales (OLS, PWI-SC and BMSLSS) used as dependent variables, and age, gender and times of measurement (wave of data collection) were used as independent variables. Main results present that there are significant reductions of all subjective well-being means over time (from 2012 to 2019) regardless gender and age. These results denounce the profound changes in contexts associated with diminished investment in education, access to health, social care and children’s rights’ policies overall in Brazil and reinforce the perspective that children’s participation in society is essential for the development of public policies that represent their current needs.
