One way that countries may differ in responding to the COVID‐19 pandemic is how they withstand extreme adversity while maintaining their societal values and institutions. This study explored national resilience in Israel, the Philippines, and Brazil during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Using Crisis in Context Theory, cross‐national understanding of national resilience was examined by assessing measurement models, exploring country differences in perceptions, and determining its predictors. Data from an internationally diverse sample of 1,587 adults were collected using multiple measures and subsequently subjected to various analytical strategies. Results on the factor structure of NR‐13 demonstrated acceptable fit of both first‐order and higher‐order models for each country, with generally high factor loadings. However, measurement invariance was only supported at the configural level for the first‐order model. Among the three countries, national resilience was highest in Israel, followed by the Philippines, and lowest in Brazil. Taken collectively, both individual and ecological variables contributed a significant variance in national resilience in each country. Community resilience, quality of life, and perceived threats were consistently strong predictors of national resilience across countries. Results are discussed. The Community and Social Impact Statement of the study can be found in the Supplementary Material section.
We compared three types of resilience (individual, community, and national resilience), two indicators of distress (sense of danger and distress symptoms) and wellbeing, among samples from Israel, Brazil, and the Philippines, during the “first-wave” of COVID-19 pandemic. Though significant differences were found among the samples regarding all variables, similarities were also emerged. Individual resilience and wellbeing negatively predicted distress symptoms in each sample, and women of all samples reported higher level of distress-symptoms compared with men. The differences between the samples are presented and discussed. Understanding the similarities and the differences, between these cultures, may help developing efficient countermeasures tailored to each country. This knowledge may promote efficient health policy to foster people’s ability to cope with the hardship and to prevent future psychological and health implications.
The current business competitive environment has influenced companies to cross national borders to explore foreign markets. The decision about in which country the company should invest isn't easy. Many factors can influence this decision, and culture is one of factors that international business scholars have incorporated in their researches. This article deals with the influence of cultural distances on Foreign Direct Investment, specifically it aims to examine whether cultural values affects bilateral Foreign Direct Investment, that is, Foreign Direct Investment Stock. Data that include bilateral Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure technique between 45 countries in 2007 were used, representing almost 95% of the Foreign Direct Investment Stock worldwide. The Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure technique was used. It was found that the similarities in Power Distance between two countries positively affects the Foreign Direct Investment stock between them (it means that companies prefer countries similar from their home country) and the presence of high Uncertainty Avoidance in one or in both countries of a dyad negatively affects the Foreign Direct Investment stock between them (it means that companies avoid countries that are different from their home country). Contributions: (1) uses an innovative approach Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure technique to analyze how individual cultural dimensions influence Foreign Direct Investment; (2) responds to the critique by Shenkar, by applying separate rather than aggregate cultural distance; (3) unveils how some cultural dimensions work in influencing FDI.
This research aimed to characterize the interorganizational network of exporting companies in Maringá (PR). Social Network perspective is used to discuss the interorganizational relationship through concepts such as centrality, strong and weak ties, social embeddedness, embedded ties and arms-length ties. The population was 47 and the questionnaires were applied in 31 exporting companies, 66% of the population. When dealing with their relationships with organizations, the exporting companies concentrate their relationships on the value chain (buyers and suppliers). These relationships tend to be embedded and frequent, where each company plays only one role in relation to the other. Even though only four exporting companies cited theirs competitors as organizations with which they keep a more frequent contact, there is evidence of the existence of coopetition in these relationships. Eight exporting companies mentioned trade associations and companies formed by competitors as institutions with which they keep frequent contact, that is, these companies keep contact with competitors through institutions (evidence of the existence of coopetition). Limitations: The number of companies in the sample limits the statistical analysis. In trying to mitigate this problem, all the questionnaires were applied in loco assuring that the respondents were the correct informants. The number of variables in the ANOVA – GLM was limited to two, trying to keep the statistical power. As research suggestion, the population should be expanded. The role of institutions should be analyzed in depth, especially of the Mercosul Institute and the Banco do Brasil. The role of institution in the coopetition should be analyzed.
