The article is devoted to literary translation, the problem of its quality assessment in particular, and deals with the concepts of “equivalence” and “adequacy”. The characteristic features of a child-narrator’s speech and its translation are analyzed as the material for the study, since it is considered as one of the key components of an image. The analysis focuses on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer “Extremely loud and incredibly close” (2005) and its translation into Russian by V. Arkanov (2007). The chief methods employed are: continuous sampling, comparative analysis, and classification. The novelty of research consists in applying some categories of quality assessment to the translation of a literary text element that has not previously been subjected to such an analysis. The authors believe that equivalence cannot be considered, as is traditionally accepted, as fundamental unit the crucial criterion while analyzing the quality of speech characteristics in literary translation. Thus, some new categories/features should be implemented into the system of quality assessment of a literary text translation.
