Em 2017, Paulo Gala publicou a obra Complexidade Econômica: Uma Nova
Perspectiva para Entender a Antiga Questão da Riqueza das Nações. Esse trabalho trouxe ao Brasil uma perspectiva até então pouco explorada do Atlas de Complexidade
Econômica elaborado em 2011 por Cesar Hidalgo e Ricardo Hausmann junto à
Universidade de Harvard.
A conceito central de Gala (2017) diz respeito à complexidade econômica das
mercadorias exportadas, onde as mercadorias de maior complexidade são capazes de
produzir maiores ganhos econômicos e desenvolvimento para uma economia. O autor
expõe várias razões para o Brasil ser um país não desenvolvido e que não avança
economicamente e ao final de sua obra traça algumas diretrizes para o enfrentamento do atraso.
O Índice de Complexidade Econômica é capaz de ilustrar não somente a situação
econômica de uma região em termos de desenvolvimento como também monitorar sua
evolução no tempo e traçar diretrizes e políticas públicas que guiem ao desenvolvimento.
É devido à importância desse indicador que este artigo busca investigar se há
aplicação da análise da Complexidade Econômica para o Estados brasileiros. O trabalho
está dividido em quatro partes incluindo esta introdução. Na segunda seção é realizado
uma rápida definição de Complexidade Econômica, destacando o papel central que a
diversidade possui nesse contexto. Posteriormente, é realizado uma análise de regressão linear com base nos dados de Complexidade Econômica dos Estados brasileiros calculados e disponibilizados pelo DataViva. A última seção apresenta os principais achados desta pesquisa, aponta as principais dificuldades e elenca pontos que podem ser alvos de futuras pesquisas.
