Chlordecone (Kepone) (CLD) is a highly persistent pesticide which was extensively used in the French West Indies; high levels of CLD can still currently be found in large agricultural areas. As CLD transfers from soil to animals mainly via involuntary ingestion, the consumption of foodstuffs derived from animals raised in contaminated areas may significantly contribute to exposure of humans to CLD. The present study was designed to test the efficacy of two different activated carbons (ACs) sources in limiting CLD transfer from soil to animal. Three soils (ASs) were prepared according to the OECD guideline 207. One standard soil (SS) lacking AC, and two modified preparations of SS supplemented with 2% coconut-based activated carbon (ORBO), SSO or with 2% lignite-based one (DARCO), SSD. All three soils were spiked with 10 μg of kepone per g of dry matter and aged for three weeks. This study involved 15 goat kids randomly assigned to the 3 experimental groups (n = 5/ group), which were fed the experimental matrices at an exposure dose of 10 μg CLD per kg of body weight per day. After 21 d of oral exposure, CLD in adipose tissue and liver were analysed by LC-MS-MS. A significant decrease of 63.7% and 74.7% of CLD concentrations in adipose tissue and liver, respectively, were obtained from animals exposed using SS containing DARCO as compared to those receiving only SS. Decreases in CLD levels of 98.2% (adipose tissue) and 98.7% (liver) were obtained for animals exposed using SS containing ORBO. This study leads us to conclude that (i) the presence of AC in CLD-contaminated soil strongly reduces CLD bioavailability, and (ii) the efficacy depends on the nature and characteristics of the AC used.

RESUMO -Com o objetivo de avaliar as características de carcaça e a alometria dos cortes comerciais e dos tecidos de cabritos F1 Boer × Saanen, 35 animais foram abatidos ao atingirem 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25 kg de peso vivo (PV). A dieta dos animais foi composta de leite de vaca nos primeiros 49 dias e ração à vontade do sétimo dia até o abate. Os cortes foram obtidos após o resfriamento da carcaça e a perna foi dissecada em músculo, osso e gordura. O PV teve efeito linear decrescente no rendimento de carcaça fria e na área de olho-de-lombo por kg de carcaça. Os pesos de perna, paleta e pescoço em relação à carcaça fria decresceram linearmente, mas houve efeito quadrático sobre o rendimento de costelas e lombo. O crescimento de paleta, pescoço e perna foi isométrico (b=1) ao do corpo, enquanto o das costelas e do lombo foi mais lento (b≠ 1). Os músculos da perna cresceram igualmente, a gordura mais lenta e os ossos mais rapidamente que a perna, enquanto o desenvolvimento da gordura subcutânea foi mais tardio que o da intermuscular. Para obtenção de carcaça de 8 a 11 kg com rendimento superior a 44%, boa proporção de músculo e gordura com menor perda durante o resfriamento, recomenda-se abater os animais com PV entre 20 e 25 kg, mas, se o objetivo for carcaça de menor peso, o abate dos animais deve ser feito ao final do aleitamento com aproximadamente 10 kg de peso corporal.Palavras-chave: crescimento, gordura, lombo, músculo, perna Carcass traits and tissue allometry in Boer × Saanen kidsABSTRACT -Thirty-five male kids Boer × Saanen kids were shaughtered at 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25 kg BW to evaluate the carcass traits and commercial cuts and tissues allometry. The diet fed to the animas was composed by cow milk in the first 49 days and ad libitum ration from the seventh day until slaughter. The cuts were obtained after cooling of the carcass and the leg dissected in muscle, bone and fat. The body weight showed a negative linear effect on cold carcass dressing and the loin-eye area/kg of carcass. The weights of leg, shoulder and neck in relation to cold carcass linearly decrease however there was a quadratic effect on ribs and loin yield. The shoulder, neck and leg showed an isometric growth (b=1) with the body, while ribs and loin was slower (b≠ 1). The growth of leg muscle was isometric, fat slower and faster then leg, while the subcutaneous fat was slower than the intermuscle fat. To achieve a carcass with 8 to 11 kg with superior yield of 44%, good muscle and fat proportion with lesser loss during the cooling, it is recommended to slaughter the animals weighting between 20 and 25 kg.BW. However, if the objective is to obtain carcass of slower weight, the male goat kids should be slaughtered at the end of the milking period, around 10 kg BW.

RESUMO -Com o objetivo de estudar o efeito da restrição alimentar sobre as características da carcaça de caprinos leiteiros, realizou-se um experimento utilizando 27 cabritos castrados da raça Saanen. Os animais (PV inicial de 20 kg) foram distribuídos nos tratamentos alimentação à vontade e 30 e 60% de restrição, sendo abatidos aos 35 kg de PV. Foram avaliados o rendimento comercial e biológico, os cortes comerciais, a área de olho-de-lombo e a composição tecidual da perna. O rendimento biológico não foi afetado pela restrição alimentar, mas o comercial diminuiu com o aumento da restrição. A elevação no nível de restrição alimentar promoveu diminuição do lombo e da 6 a a 13 a costelas e aumento da paleta e do pescoço, proporcionalmente à meia-carcaça. A proporção de ossos aumentou e a de gordura total diminuiu com o aumento da restrição. O tecido muscular não foi afetado pela restrição. A restrição alimentar de até 30% não prejudicou a qualidade da carcaça de caprinos leiteiros.Palavras-chave: cabritos castrados, composiçao tecidual, gordura, músculo, rendimento comercial Feed restriction in goats: carcass yield, commercial cuts, and carcass composition ABSTRACT -Twenty-seven Saanen male kids averaging 20 kg of body weight (BW) at the beginning of the trial were used to study the effects of feed restriction on carcass characteristics. Animals were assigned to one of the following three treatments: control (fed ad libitum), 30 or 60% of feed restriction. A completely randomized design was used and data were submitted to regression analysis; animals were slaughtered when they reached 35 kg of BW. The following traits were measured in this trial: carcass commercial and biological yields, commercial cuts, tissue composition of hind leg, rib eye area (REA), and carcass compactness. Increasing feed restriction reduced carcass and commercial cut weights as well as loin and fat proportions in the carcass. Conversely, proportions of bone, neck, and shoulder clod all increased when the feed restriction went from 0 to 60%. Muscle tissue proportion was not changed by feed restriction in this study. RESUMO -Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar o efeito dos níveis de restrição alimentar (0, 30 e 60%) sobre o desempenho produtivo e econômico de cabritos F1 Boer x Saanen. Foram utilizados 21 cabritos inteiro, com média de 15,44±0,37 kg de peso vivo (PV). Os animais do nível de restrição 0%, quando atingiram 25 kg de PV, foram submetidos a jejum (sólido de 24 horas e hídrico de 16 horas) e abatidos com seus pares. A análise econômica foi referente, exclusivamente, aos custos com alimentação (U$1,00:R$3,70). A eficiência alimentar dos animais submetidos a 0 e 30% de restrição não diferiu. A restrição teve efeito linear decrescente para renda bruta média, quadrática para margem bruta média e rentabilidade média. Houve redução do custo da alimentação por kg de corpo vazio, de carcaça quente e de carcaça fria. A restrição em níveis moderados manteve a eficiência alimentar e reduziu as perdas com alimentação. A criação de cabrito leiteiro para abate entre 20 e 25 kg de PV, com restrição a partir dos 15 kg, aumentou a rentabilidade sobre o investimento em alimentação até o nível de 15,59% e diminuiu os custos com alimentação por kg de carcaça fria até o nível de 16,13% de restrição, caracterizando-se como alternativa ao sacrifício desses animais e à agregação de valor ao sistema de produção. Por outro lado, a compra de cabritos a preço de mercado para terminação até 25 kg de PV caracterizou-se como atividade de risco.Palavras-chave: eficiência alimentar, peso de carcaça fria, rentabilidade média Effect of Feed Restriction on Economical and Productive Performances of F1-Boer x Saanen GoatsABSTRACT -The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of different feed restriction levels (0, 30 and 60%) on economical and productive performances of F1-Boer x Saanen goats. Twenty-one non-castrated goats with 15.44±0.37 kg of mean live weight (LW) were used. When animals submitted to 0% of feed restriction reached 25 kg of LW they and their pair were slaughtered after 24 h of feed fasting and 16 h of water fasting. Economical analysis was performed considering exclusively feed costs and the currency conversion (U$ 1.00 = R$ 3.70) at the period in which trial was carried out. There was no difference between feed conversions of animals submitted to 0 and 30% of restriction. Restriction had decreasing linear effect on average gross revenue, quadratic effect on average gross margin and average profitability. It was observed reduction in feed cost per kg of empty body, hot carcass and cold carcass. Restriction in moderate levels maintained feed conversion efficiency and reduced feed losses. Dairy goat breeding for slaughtering between 20 to 25 kg of LW with feed restriction from 15 kg increased profitability on feed investments until the level of 15.59%; and decreased feed costs per kg of cold carcass until the level of 16.13% of restriction.
