The objective of this study was to evaluate oxidative stress in lambs experimentally infected with Haemonchus contortus and supplemented with selenium and vitamin E. Twenty male Corriedale lambs were divided into four experimental groups with five animals each: G1 consisted of animals infected and supplemented with 0.2 mg/kg of live weight (LW) sodium selenite by intramuscular injection (IM); G2 consisted of animals infected with larvae and supplemented with 0.2 mg/kg LW sodium selenite IM and 2000 IU per animal of Vitamin E IM; G3 consisted of animals infected with larvae and supplemented with 2000 IU per animal of Vitamin E IM; and G4 consisted of animals infected with larvae. The animals were infected orally with 500 H. contortus larvae (L3) every 48 hours for 20 days. For biochemical analyses and eggs per grams of feces (EPG) evaluation, blood and feces were both collected at zero (T0), 20 (T1), 40 (T2) and 60 (T3) days. The weight of the animals was also measured at these times. Lower TBARS values were observed in the supplemented animals compared to the control group. The groups supplemented with Selenium exhibited blood GSH-Px activity higher than that of non-supplemented animals. Supplementation with selenium provided greater antioxidant protection against oxidative stress generated from experimental infection of lambs with H. contortus.

The objective of this study was to evaluate neutrophil oxidative metabolism and haemogram in sheep experimentally infected with Haemonchus contortus and supplemented with selenium and vitamin E. Twenty male Corriedale sheep were utilised and distributed into four experimental groups each with five animals infected with larvae: G1--supplemented with sodium selenite, 0.2 mg/kg body weight (bw) given intramuscularly (IM); G2--supplemented with sodium selenite and vitamin E, 0.2 mg/kg bw and 2000 IU per animal, respectively, both IM; G3--supplemented with vitamin E, 2000 IU per animal IM; G4--not supplemented. A haemogram and the number of parasite eggs were determined in samples of blood and faeces, respectively, on days zero (T0), 20 (T1), 40 (T2) and 60 (T3) and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) assays were performed on heparinized blood samples taken on days zero, 30 and 60. A lower total leucocyte count was detected in G1 in relation to G4 at T4. Lymphocytes were reduced in G1 in relation to G3 and G4 at T3. In both non-stimulated (NBT-NS) and stimulated (NBT-S) dye reduction assays, there was reduced activity at 60 days, in relation to other times in the groups treated with selenium (G1 and G2). On the basis of results obtained, we conclude that supplementation with selenium provides better antioxidant protection to neutrophils.

Perfil proteico e metabolismo oxidativo de cordeiros experimentalmente infectados peloHaemonchus contortus e suplementados com selênio e vitamina E

ResumoO presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o perfil oxidativo, eritrograma e interação mineral em cordeiros com anemia verminótica suplementados com diferentes formas de ferro oral. Foram utilizados 27 cordeiros com idade entre 6 e 8 meses naturalmente infectados por Haemonchus contortus, apresentando volume globular entre 16 e 18%. Os animais foram divididos em três grupos; Grupo controle (GC) n= 9, Grupo Sulfato ferroso (G2) n= 9 e Grupo Sulfato férrico (G3) n= 9. Os animais do G2 receberam via oral, diariamente 1 grama de sulfato ferroso (Fe +2 ), equivalente a 200 miligramas de ferro, os animais do G3 receberam 1 grama de sulfato férrico (Fe +3 ) via oral, diariamente, equivalente a 200 miligramas de ferro, os animais do GC não receberam tratamento. As coletas foram realizadas nos dias 0, 7, 14, 21 e 28 do experimento, e durante quatro dias dois animais de cada grupo foram mantidos em gaiolas metabólicas para mensuração da excreção fecal de minerais. Não houve diferença entre os grupos nos valores de ferro sérico e parâmetros de eritrócitos do sangue. Os valores de cobre e zinco sérico foram inferiores nos G2 e G3 nos dias 21 e 28 do experimento, enquanto que a excreção fecal de cobre, ferro e zinco foram superiores nesses mesmos grupos. Os teores da superoxido desmutase (SOD) foram inferiores nos G2 e G3 no dia 28 enquanto que os teores dos grupos tióis protéicos (NPTH) foram menores nos G2 e G3 nos dias 21 e 28. Os valores de espécies reativas ao ácido tio-barbitúrico (TBARS) foram maiores no dia 28 nos G2 e G3. A suplementação de 200mg de ferro, independente da sua forma, ferrosa ou férrica, não aumenta a resposta eritrocitária em cordeiros com anemia verminótica. Esses compostos possuem ação antagonista sobre cobre e zinco, diminuindo as concentrações séricas desses minerais e aumentando excreção fecal dos mesmos. Em decorrência da diminuição das concentrações séricas de cobre e zinco houve uma diminuição da atividade da superóxido dismutase causando estresse oxidativo. RESUMO O presente trabalho descreve o isolamento do Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis no sêmen de um carneiro da raça Suffolk proveniente do Município de São Martinho da Serra, RS. Ao exame físico constatou-se aumento de volume subcutâneo aderido à pele, junto à inserção do escroto, próximo ao plexo pampiniforme esquerdo. Realizou-se exame andrológico com coleta de sêmen e, posteriormente, punção no local da lesão, obtendo-se material viscoso de coloração amarelo esverdeado. As amostras coletadas (sêmen e material obtido da punção) foram enviadas ao LABAC (Laboratório de Bacteriologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria) para realização de cultura bacteriana. Em ambas as amostras, foi isolado o cocobacilo Gram positivo denominado C. pseudotuberculosis.

The objective of this research was to estimate genetic parameters and genetic trends (GT) for 305-day milk yield (MY305) and 305-day fat yield (FY305) of purebred Dairy Gir animals of the National Dairy Gir Breeding Program. The restricted maximum likelihood method was used in an animal model. GT were obtained via linear regression and divided into two periods (1935-1992 and 1993-2013 for PL305; 1935-1992 and 1993-2010 for MY305). The estimated heritabilities were 0.23 (MY305) and 0.10 (FY305). The GT (kg/year) values for MY305 in the 2nd period for measured females (25.49), females (26.11), and males (35.13) were higher than those found in the 1st period (2.52; 2.06, and 1.00, respectively). The heritability estimated for MY305 confirmed the possibility of genetic improvement by selection and indicated a lower additive genetic effect on FY305 of purebred animals. The genetic progress for MY305 in all purebred population is denoted by the more expressive gains found from 1990’s, when the first bull catalogs were published.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and genetic trends of different conformation and management traits regularly measured within the context of the National Dairy Gir Breeding Program (PNMGL). The estimation of genetic and residual variances for each trait was performed using average information restricted maximum likelihood (AI-REML) procedure in AIREMLF90 program software. The population was divided into three subpopulations constituted by measured females (with phenotype records), all females, and males. Linear regressions were applied for each trait, considering two periods of birth (1st period: 1938-1996; 2nd period: 1997-2012). The estimated heritability of conformation and management traits varied from 0.01 to 0.53, denoting a perspective of genetic improvement through selection and corrective matings for purebred Dairy Gir populations. The average genetic changes in conformation and management traits were, in general, variable and inexpressive, showing that the selection of Dairy Gir may have had been directed essentially to increase milk yield. The analysis of the two periods of birth indicated that some linear traits present progress (although inexpressive) in the 2nd period (more recent period).
