O crescimento populacional nas últimas décadas vem acentuando cada vez mais os problemas decorrentes do acúmulo e descarte inadequado de resíduos sólidos orgânicos (RSO) produzidos em ambiente urbano. A compostagem é uma técnica de biodegradação da fração orgânica realizada por microrganismos que pode ser empregada no gerenciamento dos RSO. O objetivo do trabalho foi contribuir para reflexão através de uma revisão bibliográfica em sítios da Web of Science, Google Scholar e Periódicos da Capes sobre os principais métodos de compostagem de RSO realizados em ambientes domésticos. As principais técnicas de compostagem foram: em recipientes de plástico, em composteiras automatizadas, em recipientes metálicos e em leiras. Introdução: O contínuo aumento da população e consequentemente aumento na demanda por alimentos, geram amplificação de resíduos alimentares que não são aproveitados. A compostagem é uma biotecnologia capaz de transformar resíduos alimentares em um novo produto com características distintas dos materiais originais empregados, o composto orgânico. Objetivo: Quantificar, qualificar e compostar resíduos alimentares domésticos de uma comunidade localizada em São Luís (MA). Material e Métodos: Os resíduos alimentares (RA’s) foram coletados seletivamente com moradores de uma comunidade adjacente ao centro de São Luís, por 30 dias. Os RA’s foram encaminhados para uma unidade de compostagem localizada no IFMA - Campus Monte Castelo, onde foram realizados quantificação, qualificação e compostagem. A quantificação foi realizada por meio de pesagens em balança semi-analítica; a qualificação foi realizada conforme verificação da presença dos diversos RA’s com observações nas repetições em que esses resíduos apareceram em cada coleta; a compostagem foi realizada em recipientes de plásticos cilíndricos com tampa e orifícios nas laterais, RA’s e adição de folhas secas encontradas na unidade de compostagem, o processo ocorreu durante 95 dias com revolvimentos constantes no primeiro mês. Para tabulação dos dados foi utilizado o Microsoft Excel. Resultados: Durante as coletas foram reaproveitados cerca de 53,5 kg de RA’s. De modo geral, os resíduos orgânicos tiveram pouca variação na composição entre os participantes da pesquisa, com destaque para os seguintes RA’s: cascas e partes de frutas (35%), resíduos de hortaliças (20%), cereais, massas e pães (16%), raízes, tubérculos e bulbos (14%), pó de café (7%), casas de ovos (7%) e plantas medicinais (1%). Ao findar a compostagem houve produção de composto orgânico enriquecido com a diversidade de materiais coletados, o composto foi utilizado em uma horta agroecológica escolar localizada em bairro adjacente para enriquecer o solo, completar a ciclagem de nutrientes e auxiliar na nutrição dos vegetais cultivados. Conclusão: A quantificação, qualificação e compostagem foram suficientes para aportar os RA’s oriundos da comunidade no período de execução da pesquisa, validou a prática da coleta seletiva de materiais orgânicos e consolidou a compostagem como uma biotecnologia capaz de transformar alimentos não aproveitados em novos materiais/insumos para produção de alimentos.
