RESUMO: Considerando que o ambiente escolar é um lugar de formação dos indivíduos, em que são (re)construídas e legitimadas ideologias e representações sociais, e que o livro didático, em nossa realidade, destaca-se como um dos principais materiais utilizados em sala de aula, o presente artigo objetiva investigar as representações de gênero social veiculadas em livros didáticos de língua portuguesa. Analisamos os textos presentes em dois livros didáticos de língua portuguesa, com relação à abordagem realizada sobre os papéis sociais dos gêneros e sobre a sexualidade. Os resultados sugerem que, em geral, prevalece o tratamento estereotipado das relações de gênero, embora já seja perceptível a inserção de textos que remetem à emancipação feminina. Os relacionamentos homossexuais não são mencionados, provavelmente ainda permanecendo como tema tabu.
