S In this article we analyze the intersections and disjunctures between everyday (home, community, peer group) and school funds of knowledge and Discourse (Gee, 1996) that frame the school‐based, content area literacy practices of middle school‐aged youth in a predominantly Latino/a, urban community of Detroit, Michigan, in the United States. Using data collected across five years of an on‐going community ethnography, we present findings on the strength of various funds that shape the texts available to a sample of 30 young people in the community and school we studied. We then present the patterns that we analyzed across each of the different documented funds. We use our findings on the funds that youth have available to them outside of school to suggest possibilities for working toward third space (Bhabha, 1994; Gutiérrez, Baquedano‐López, Alvarez, & Chiu, 1999; Soja, 1996) around literacy and content learning in the seventh‐ and eighth‐grade, public school science classrooms of these youth, and we draw implications for literacy teaching and research in other content areas.
In this commentary, the author argues for building disciplinary literacy instructional programs, rather than merely encouraging subject matter teachers to employ literacy teaching practices and strategies. Readers might wisely question a focus on disciplinary learning in a time when new media, literacies, and social networking practices are so powerful. The author's argument is that knowledge and skill in the subject matter of the disciplines is essential to young people becoming active participants in a democratic society. Although literacy educators acknowledge the value and power of the knowledge, practices, and texts young people bring to school, it is also critical that we acknowledge the need to expand youth knowledge, practices, and texts. Disciplinary literacy instruction can help youths gain access to the accepted knowledge of the disciplines, thereby allowing them also to critique and change that knowledge. Beginning with disciplinary practices in efforts to integrate literacy instruction more fully throughout secondary schools may better position secondary school educators to draw from a range of new texts and practices available in the disciplines and in adolescents' everyday lives to generate critical learning opportunities. In this essay, Elizabeth Birr Moje argues that educators can make radical change in student learning and well-being if they reframe teachers' work with youth as less about meeting standards and more about teaching youth to navigate the multiple literacy contexts in which they live, learn, and work. To that end, Moje offers a take on disciplinary literacy instruction that puts the process of inquiry at its center. In contrast to a frame that ignores or removes value, purpose, affect, emotion, imagination, social interaction, and the learning and challenging of cultural conventions from the work of adolescent literacy teaching, she presents a teaching heuristic designed to capitalize on the social and cultural nature of disciplinary inquiry and support students in navigating multiple literacy contexts as part of the teaching of disciplinary literacy, characterized by what she terms the 4Es: engage, elicit/engineer, examine, and evaluate.
In this review, the authors interrogate the recent identity turn in literacy studies by asking, How do particular views of identity shape how researchers think about literacy and, conversely, how does the view of literacy taken by a researcher shape meanings made about identity? To address this question, the authors review various ways of conceptualizing identity by using five metaphors for identity documented in the identity literature: Identity as (a) difference, (b) sense of self/subjectivity, (c) mind or consciousness, (d) narrative, and (e) position. Few literacy studies acknowledge this range of perspectives on and views for conceptualizing identity, and yet, subtle differences in identity theories have widely different implications for how one thinks about both how literacy matters to identity and how identity matters to literacy. They offer this review to encourage more theorizing of both literacy and identity as social practices and, most important, of how the two breathe life into each other.
