SUMMARYObjectives: To determine life prevalence of suicidal behavior and associated variables among students of a School of Nutrition in a Peruvian public university. Material and methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study. Of the 322 students, those from the 5th. year could not participate, reducing the total study population to 269 (1st. to 4th. year). From these, 131 (49%) voluntarily accepted to take the survey. Previously validated questionnaires about suicidal behavior and homicidal ideation, Zung Depression and Anxiety scales, indicators of antisocial behavior, and CAGE (alcohol-related problems) were applied. Bivariate analysis were carried out to detect statistical significance, with a p<0.05 value.
In order to evaluate the frequency of depressive symptomatology (DS) and alcohol-related problems (ARP) during the academic training of medical students from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, a cross-sectional study was conducted among students from first to sixth year of career. The Zung Self-Rating depression scale was used to evaluate DS and the CAGE questionnaire to evaluate ARP. 23.3% of participants had DS, and 7.3% had ARP. We found that the frequency of DS and ARP was higher among students in the first years of career. We recommend it is necessary to take action in the prevention and detection of these disorders from the first years of training of medical students.
